In my role at UC Davis, I am responsible for the technical administration of the UC Davis' NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA collections and databases. I manage the care and documentation of items and records pertinent to NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA-related compliance. I collaborate with the UC Davis Department of Anthropology Museum and many other campus museums to ensure accurate documentation and reporting of the Native American items held in stewardship by the Campus. I review, analyze, and synthesize a wide array of historical, archaeological, and curatorial documentation to support tribal consultations, repatriations, and the day-to-day implementation of the UC Davis Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation Policy.

Responsible for the curatorial management of the University's NAGPRA-related collections. Day-to-day tasks included inventorying, cataloging, and rehabilitating collections; managing the documentation of NAGPRA collections; and conducting archival research relevant to locating archaeological sites, identifying funerary objects, and compiling general archaeological context information. I was also responsible for arranging logistics for NAGPRA consultations, including travel accommodations for visiting tribal members, preparing consultation materials, and recording consultation notes.

Primary duty was as an assistant to the NAGPRA coordinator. I developed reports detailing the historical context and provenience of ancestral remains and funerary objects, which included extensive research of documents such as catalog records, project reports and field notes. I synthesized this data into one report, which was used to facilitate the processing of the NAGPRA collections and as a starting document for future NAGPRA compliance documentation.Responsible for sorting, compiling, and organizing museum records, reconciling documentary errors, and identifying methods for future documentation management and maintenance. Assisted with the development of an inventory plan with procedures and protocols for the accessioning, cataloging, and curating of a large archaeological collection.

Leadership role during the summer 2013 move of four museum collections— the California Indian Heritage Center (CIHC), State Railroad Museum, Sutter’s Fort, and the State Parks museum repository—to new facilities. Worked primarily with the CIHC Native basketry collection, safely packing and transporting 6500 baskets while directing and delegating moving tasks to a team of fellow students. Other objects packed included architectural components, artwork, daguerreotypes, and an array of historical objects. Assisted in consultations with Native American Tribes as stipulated by State and Federal laws and internal DPR policy. Built storage mounts for artwork, basketry, shell, stone, regalia, and various historic objects. Cleaned basketry (including wet-cleaning) and executed integrated pest management protocol, including freezing treatments and the elimination of infestations.Demonstrated mount-making and preservation techniques to CSUS students and State Parks employees. Attended lithic analysis workshops hosted by state archaeologists and participated in the creation of a standardized lexicon for the CIHC lithic collection. Well-versed in the TMS database; proficient in location moves, queries, loan protocol, condition reports, and record creation. Instruct others in the proper use of the database.

Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (ANTH 2, Dr. Castaneda): Responsibilities included proctoring exams, grading assignments, and answering student questions.Museum Methods (ANTH 177, Dr. Castaneda): Led class in the development, design, and fabrication of an exhibit highlighting late nineteenth and early twentieth-century ethnographic textiles, decorative arts, and natural history specimens related to my thesis. Also taught proper preservation procedures and basic curatorial and archival research techniques.

Responsible for the preparation of reports documenting anthropological, archaeological, and historical investigations for inclusion in NEPA documentation and compliance with federal cultural resources directives as stipulated in 36 CFR 800. Examined over 500 pieces of obsidian debitage excavated in Modoc County in August 2011. Analyzed basic object morphology and typography and delivered a representative sample to my supervisor for further Obsidian Hydration Dating analysis. Founding member of the Indigenous Stewardship Methods Committee, which aimed to develop modern adaptations of Indigenous ethnobotanical land management practices in collaboration with agronomists, biologists, and NRCS Tribal Liaisons.Developed educational materials for NRCS staff regarding the Section 106 process, NRCS cultural resource policies and procedures, and general anthropological and archaeological appreciation. Advanced anthropological knowledge within the agency by inviting speakers to the NRCS Heritage Celebrations such as the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.

Inventoried and cataloged an archival collection of Ecological Site Descriptions and Soil Surveys dating from the 1940s to the present and incorporated it into the NRCS research library. Responsible for the research, writing, and editing of federal documents pertaining to the environmental stability of California’s ecological environments and their temporal changes.

I was a graduate curator and team leader for this exhibit. I supervised two undergraduate students under the guidance of Professor Joyce Bishop. I worked on every aspect of the exhibit, included design, the writing of interpretive text, fabrication of various vignettes, installation, and docenting.

San Bernardino National Forest, Broom Flat

Professors: Dr. William Sapp, Daniel McCarthy, Susan Wood. Five-week field school. Assisted in the survey of approximately 800 acres in the Broom Flat area and excavation at Juniper Springs, a temporary camp in the Piñon-Juniper zone of the San Bernardino National Forest. Also received instruction in mountain and desert biology, ethnobotany, and collections management. Special project: preparation and cooking of traditional acorn mush.

Sacramento, California Area

Researched and developed a section of the exhibit structured on the history and genealogy of the collector. Research included visits to the California State Archives and to the historic Pioneer Cemetery at Sloughouse. Conducted curatorial research on California Native basketry and textiles, including cultural provenience, function, materials, techniques of manufacture, context of collecting, and contemporary value.

Assisted with NAGPRA compliance by conducting inventories of human skeletal remains and aided in the writing of formal notices. Assisted in the curation of archaeological collections. Assisted with the preservation of museum collections by making archival quality storage and following integrated pest management protocol. Assisted in maintaining museum records and database.
