I first met him in Stockholm, Sweden when I was serving at the president of the Sweden Stockholm Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Eventually 18 months into his mission, I called him to serve as one of my two assistants to the president. He was an invaluable assistant to me. He gave a training presentation every month to all 120 missionaries, he solved problems, he offered good counsel to me as well as to his peers, he worked tirelessly for the good of others, not himself, he was always organized and prepared, and he exercised good judgment, maturity, and responsibility. Devin is a man of high integrity and character. He possesses a global perspective as both a leader and a manager. He is serious and conscientious, yet has a sense of humor and demonstrates kindness, empathy, and concern for others. He is not critical of others, but seeks ways to be of help and assistance. He is an excellent public speaker, and has great interpersonal skills. Two weeks before my return to the States at the conclusion of our three years in Sweden, we were blessed by the visit of the number two man in the headquarters of our worldwide church of 13 million members. Devin prepared and presented a 30-minute presentation of the history, challenges, and accomplishments of the mission to this distinguished leader. It was simply outstanding. He showed initiative and foresight as he organized the transportation, housing and care of 120 missionaries from all over the country who had assembled for this historic event, the 100th anniversary of the Swedish Mission. He understood the long term view, yet paid attention to the details. The event was a huge success, and in no small measure due to Devin’s thoughtful planning and follow-through.
