I am currently working for Q-CTRL (Sydney, NSW, Australia) where I am developing portable quantum sensors for magnetometry and gravity mapping.My postdoctoral research at the University of Birmingham focused on industrial applications of atom interferometry. I developed a novel laser system design for portable quantum sensing that utilised fibre Bragg grating technology and culminated in a publication in Optics Letters (https://doi.org/10.1364/OL.415963). This system was designed to allow robust, high-bandwidth atom interferometry for applications such as inertial navigation and the mapping of Earth’s gravitational field. This could have a wide range of valuable industrial and defense uses such as the detection of engineering faults, sinkholes, submarines and oil and mineral deposits.My doctoral work included the construction of a functioning prototype magneto-optical microscopy system for neuroscientific research applications (optical biomagnetometry). My doctoral work also included the characterisation of doped diamond samples as a magneto-sensitive laser gain material. This research could potentially lead to an ultra-sensitive magnetometer with uses in industry, medicine and defence including submarine navigation, external neural sensing and oil and gas exploration.
