As an elected officer, key responsibilities included representing students both on an individual basis and as a student body at various levels (responsible for overseeing Sport, Health and wellbeing within the Union), influencing University strategy and policy through student consultation, appropriate focus groups and feedback. The role included trusteeship of the Students’ Union Charity, with responsibility for setting long-term organisational strategy, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, and approving Union policy. I also had the opportunity to work collaboratively between the local authorities and key partners; this supported my continuing development and understanding of regional and national agendas. I learnt many skills in this role from organising training, budget negotiation, presentation skills, events management, conflict resolution, investigation and tribunal training as well as report writing on finance and staffing issues and the accountability that comes with being a trustee. As a trustee I have chaired several interview panels, appointing both permanent staff and student placements. I have also been instrumental in setting up a sports brand, Sports Awards ceremony and supporting the development of sport and its future at the University of Plymouth.
