As a mine surveyor, there are a number of different roles that I perform to assist in the daily success of mine operations, including:- Providing direction for the construction of earthworks structures such as dumps, buttresses, tailings dams and shovel pits. Additionally, I ensure that these structures are constructed in accordance with engineering specifications.- Providing guidance on the location and orientation of coal seams and geological structures to enhance the efficiency of coal extraction and maximize recovery.- Ensure day to day changes within the pit are documented and that consistent topographic data is delivered for engineers to base their designs and decisions off of.- Complete drone flights for photography and topography updates.- Conduct surveys of stockpiles and mine workings for month-end reconciliations.

Working at the Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark required a diverse skill set as a result of the number of functions required in the Staff Geoscientist role, these included:- Project Management of the Geo-Interpretive Centre bringing the project through inception, concept development, initial costing and preliminary design. Overall project budget forecasted at ~$1.25M, with over $0.8M raised.- Evaluation, classification and prioritization of sites of geological interest (geosites) for scientific, educational and touristic purposes. - Development of a geological field guide to communicate the importance of the geosites to prospective tourists and the general public. - Creation of information signs to convey core geological concepts at the geosites. - Delivery of scientific and geologic programming to the general public.

Studied to earn Bachelors of Applied Science, Geological Engineering. Used the Cooperative Education Program to gain valuable on the job experience and knowledge from a wide variety of areas and departments.

My time with Soil Engineers Ltd. was invaluable as it taught me numerous aspects of problem-solving and project management. During this period I was responsible for supervising and monitoring the installation of numerous earthworks structures for residential applications. The installation of these structures was comprised of engineered fill, trench backfill, retaining wall installation, clay liner installation, and french drain installation across a number of different sites. Project and time management became a fundamental aspect of my role when I was responsible for monitoring up to three sites at one time.

This was a great position for me as it allowed me to showcase the power and versatility of the Geological Engineering Program from the University of Waterloo. During this period I was shared between both the Geology and Geotechnical Engineering Departments at the Aurora Mine. As a result of this opportunity, I accumulated an array of experience in orebody delineation and 3D modelling from borehole logs, identification of geomechanical units of weakness from geology interpretation, generation of drilling forecast surfaces, modelling of tailings dam slope stability, evaluation of tailings dams and dykes for regulatory reporting requirements, and participation in overburden drilling identification and investigation.

The primary responsibilities associated with this role included providing daily survey data for real time volume estimations and earth structure completion rates. Our team provided complete and accurate data for a number of different applications including, but not limited to: tailings asbuilts, earthworks asbuilts, shovel pit asbuilts, coke beach asbuilts, tailings pipe alignment and layout, earthworks layout, and shovel pit layout surveys. Furthermore, I was responsible for several regulatory water level surveys and an evaluation of Syncrude's current GPS Static Survey Infrastructure.

As a field assistant in exploration at the Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada I examined old core with new X - Ray Fluorescence technology in order to determine if any feasible resources were present. I also gained proficiency in rock and muck sampling procedures. In addition, I gained exposure to underground mining work and safety procedures.

During this period I expanded on my previous knowledge base. I supplemented my hydrogeology monitoring experience with well drilling, piezometer installation and landfill monitoring activities.

My primary responsibilities in this role were data entry, data cleanup and correction as well as field work. During my term I participated in numerous field exercises that ranged from monitoring programs to sampling events.
