I cleaned up the mess left by a hacker gang that was conducting Internet Relay Chat takeover wars from scientific workstations on campus and had compromised administrative servers. I reinstalled SGI IRIX on several high-end Silicon Graphics workstations and compute servers, replaced insecure Telnet with SSH and configured tcp_wrappers to provide protection at the workstation level. I eliminated the use of rhosts and other methods that allowed password-less logins between workstations.A large corporate consulting firm provided literally hundreds of pages of printed vulnerability scanner results without any concrete guidance or recommendations as to what IT staff should do with that information. I educated IT staff on secure router and firewall configuration and reviewed and approved their remediation plans.A few years later, I upgraded the same servers and workstations to SGI IRIX 6.5.
