Write and edit all of the content for Profiles, the quarterly magazine of the Cabinet Makers Association (CMA), a trade association for US and Canadian cabinet makers. ATKINSONWORDS has been overseeing this project on a contract basis in close collaboration with the executive director.• Help finalize the lineup for each issue.• Set up and conduct interviews. • Write all features and most short items.• Ghostwrite pieces as needed.• Seek out high-res images.• Help map out the issue.• Review and provide feedback and direction on several rounds of layouts.• Proof the final pages.

Research Triangle Park

Alongside my independent writing/editing work at ATKINSONWORDS, I provided communications and writing support to several groups within GlaxoSmithKline, including compliance, IT, and finance. I also collaborated with the rest of my team on communications to the sales organization in the field, edited blogs, provided feedback on training modules and helped with scripts and speeches. Based on past experience, I recommended early on the addition of an automated system so that internal clients could submit their communications requests online. In Fall 2015, I helped review the system in its testing stage and wrote an introduction and helpful hints for people coming to the Internal Comms site for assistance. The submission system is now up and running.

Collaborated with field marketers and graphic designers to create direct-mail and digital marketing campaigns for the world's largest privately held software company. Wrote copy for print and digital collateral and helped to guide materials through the approval, design and print process. Won an international award from the Society for Technical Communications, as well as a "Best in Show" for the Carolina Chapter. Was on the writing team for the company's submission for Fortune Magazine's "Best Companies to Work For" competition in 2010; SAS garnered the #1 spot for the first time.

Oversaw the creation of "The Lord of the Rings Fan Club Official Movie Magazine," a bimonthly glossy focusing on the story behind the film trilogy, published in partnership with New Line Cinema. Single-handedly planned issues, assigned freelance articles, wrote features, edited all copy, and managed design and production. Previously served as public relations and marketing manager for the company, producing promotional materials and collaborating on marketing plans for its successful line of games. Wrote promotional pieces for a campaign to win an exclusive contract from Starbucks.

Produced publications and handled communications operations for the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center. Wrote articles for a variety of Duke Medical Center development, fund-raising and alumni publications. Revamped Cancer Center development newsletter. Worked as part of a team redesigning and expanding the Duke Cancer Center Web site.

Selected and edited news copy for Nando.net, a pioneering New Media operation providing constantly updated national, international, political, business and sports news. Formatted news stories and photos for the Web. Trained new editors.

Edited articles on political, economic and social developments in the former Soviet Union and East-Central Europe for bimonthly news magazine. Also served as deputy editor overseeing electronic publications. Co-edited Building Democracy 1995, the first in an annual series of books covering politics in East-Central Europe and the former Soviet Union.

Served as director of this new mentoring and scholarship program for at-risk junior and senior high students on a volunteer basis. Became the first full-time, salaried employee in September 1994. Planned fund-raisers, wrote grants and was heavily involved in community and donor relations. Recruited and supervised students and volunteers.
