My interest in VR, XR, and AR experiences was born out of my family’s Chinese roots. As a missionary, my great-grandfather opened the first YMCA in China during the Qing Dynasty. From 8,000 miles away, I was spellbound by my family’s spectacular stories of Asia.Those stories compelled me to dive into that world.In China, I began my journey learning to tell stories with spaces and visual effects beyond two dimensions. I was motivated by my desire to share what I had seen and learned there…to provide others with an opportunity to be affected as I was, without needing to travel around the globe.By studying the most accomplished VFX visionaries of our time, I’ve learned the tools and pipelines to build, capture, and stream worlds—digital experiences that emotionally teleport you. Along the way I’ve discovered an amazing creative strategy and how best to account for it.The strategy is empathy. As a creative lead my task is often to discover the story(s) and then chart a path to sharing that message in the most effective way. I focus my five senses and allow for a radical curiosity to guide me in that process. In order to get it right, the special sauce is understanding your audience. The process is enormously fun, because what’s happening today in special effects is nothing less than a new creative renaissance—a world changing opportunity. We have an abundance of new technology begging to be leveraged to address all of our senses, all of our learning styles, and all of our cultural diversity in innovative and engaging ways.
