About Cecilia Pesce
After a Bachelor and Master degree in Applied Chemistry for the conservation of Cultural Heritage at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Italy, I moved to Vienna, Austria to work as a research associate on various projects focused on built heritage conservation (natural and artificial stone materials). I obtained a PhD at Northumbria University Newcastle, UK with a work on the effects of organic additives on the behaviour of calcium hydroxide (lime) for applications in building materials. After a postdoc at the University of Sheffield, UK on thermal processing of iron-rich clinkers for sustainable cement production, I moved to industry to join the earth4Earth venture to decarbonise the construction industry.

I am responsible for the study of high temperature ternary (Al2O3-Fe2O3-CaO) and quaternary (Al2O3-Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2) systems based on synthesis and characterization experiments as well as thermodynamic modelling (CALPHAD). The work includes the synthesis of monophase and polyphase clinkers as well as the study of the effects of the presence of minor elements. I was responsible for conducting research on different projects with a focus on the conservation of mineral building materials such as natural stone and ancient mortars and plasters. The work involved the design and testing of conservation products such as calcium based nanomaterials for stone consolidation and the characterisation of samples from historic buildings and monuments. Laboratory techniques included SEM-EDX, PLM, UPV, colourimetry and water transport properties tests.
