Research Group Leader - Nutrition & Production Systems
CurrentAs part of a recent merger of livestock and aquaculture programs at CSIRO, my research group is now spanning nutrition and production research areas, which seek to deliver increased production efficiency, greater sustainability and improved management of current and emerging operations through the use of modern diets, culture systems, new species and by-products. We remain particularly focused on the growing aquaculture sector.
Group Leader - Aquaculture Nutrition Group
Aquaculture Nutrition Group Leader for the Aquaculture Program (RP6), part of CSIRO Agriculture and Food. The Nutrition Group consists of 14 staff including a nutritionist, postdoc in Nutrition, shrimp propagation experts, aquarists, a molecular biologist, analytical chemists and a feed technologist working on various multidisciplinary projects nationally and internationally
Senior Research Scientist
I am currently the Aquaculture Nutrition Leader for the Integrated Sustainable Aquaculture Production team, part of the CSIRO Agriculture and Food Business Unit. As a Senior Research Scientist, my role is to initiate, lead and contribute to a wide range of research projects which assess, review and analyse impacts of dietary changes on aquatic animal production. I am a team leader of four staff with broad expertise in feed manufacturing and chemical analyses. Our research is done within national and international settings and integrates with complimentary work in genetics, reproduction biology, aquatic animal health, environmental management and socio-economics.I have broad research interests including the digestive physiology and nutritional requirements of crustacean, fish and molluscs, the non-invasive assessment of nutritional condition, feed additives, and sustainable aquafeed ingredients and formulation.
Research Fellow
My research interests are in the field of crustacean digestive physiology and nutrition. I have been part of several research projects on spiny lobsters. My general responsibilities as an IMAS Research Fellow included managing the Nutrition technical team to carry out larval and juvenile experiments as part of a large commercial project on spiny lobster aquaculture. I was also conducting research aiming at developing new non-invasive methods to assess the nutritional and physiological condition of different species of spiny lobsters, for a range of potential applications such as predicting juvenile growth rates and energy reserves in different rearing conditions and the quality and vulnerability to transport of wild-caught adult lobsters.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
My earlier research focused on larval lobster nutrition and digestive physiology to assist in solving key production bottlenecks in the propagation of this new species for aquaculture. Specifically the development and application of innovative tools to measure feed intake and digestion in phyllosoma.
Senior Technical Officer
I managed the nutrition laboratory and activities associated with nutrition research, including organising rearing trials, proximate analysis of organic samples, allocating space and resources, co-ordinating purchases of equipment and general supplies, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations and budget monitoring
