An initial $150 million will be invested in this Research and Development phase, following the government’s endorsement of a two-year feasibility study led by the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) into a range of science-based interventions. A consortium consisting of AIMS, CSIRO, University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, James Cook University, Southern Cross University and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation will work closely with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to research promising interventions, including:• Examining ways to collect and freeze coral larvae for use in year-round coral seeding• seeding reefs with corals that are more resilient to heat to help coral reefs to evolve and adapt to the changing environment• developing technologies that increase the survival rate of coral larvae and that can produce and deploy large quantities of more resilient coral larvae• an ambitious concept to shade and cool large areas of reef at risk of bleaching by spraying microscopic saltwater droplets into clouds to make them more reflective of sunlight• investigating methods to physically stabilise damaged reefs, after cyclone and bleaching events, to facilitate faster recovery. This project delivered a model for a national framework for validating treatment technologies, alongside key research outcomes and new peer-reviewed and nationally endorsed validation protocols. Originally referred to as NatVal, this framework is now branded as WaterVal and is hosted by Water Research Australia. Stage 1 of the National Validation (NatVal) project had two core outcomes:- Creation of the Protocol Development Group (PDG) with responsibility for developing nationally accepted guidelines for validating water recycling technologies (NatVal 2.1)- Identification of knowledge gaps that act as barriers to a national validation framework, resulting in a research program to addressing these gaps and develop associated validation protocols (NatVal 2.2).In stage 2, the NatVal 2.2 research program comprised five sub-projects on:SP1—Membrane bioreactorsSP2—Reverse osmosis membranesSP3—Biological systems (activated sludge treatment)SP4—Multiple barriers (integrated systems)SP5—Pathogen testing methodsStage 3 (under Australian WaterSecure Innovations Pty Ltd) focused on 1) the peer-review, national endorsement and publications of validation protocols (available at link below) and 2) the development of a business model, contractual and risk framework for the implementation of WaterVal. International engagement was conducted primarily with the US-based Water Research Foundation and regulators in California, where Australian validation protocols are now being recommended. Show less
