I am a tribal member of the Dine'/Navajo Nation. My clans are the Bitter Water People born for the Mountain Cove People, my maternal grandparents are the Tangle People, and my paternal grandparents are the Towering House People. I currently serve as the Adolescent Health Co-Director at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board. I work with a team in developing and implementing a population health sciences research introductory program for tribal high school juniors and seniors, co-manage the We R Native project staff with www.wernative.org, the national multimedia health resource for Native youth and young adults, and the Healthy Native Youth project staff with www.healthynativeyouth.org, a one-stop-shop for educators and health advocates who want to expand learning opportunities for youth.

The project provides American Indian and Alaska Native people and communities in the Pacific Northwest with research, evaluation, training, technical assistance, and resources to promote adolescent health. The Co-Director works closely with the PI and with tribal communities, funding agencies, IHS personnel, community-based partners, HHS, and State Health Departments in the three NW states (OR, WA, ID). The Co-Director is also responsible for overseeing the development and dissemination of www.wernative.org and www.healthynativeyouth.org, in addition to coordinating, planning, implementing, and evaluating the Native American Research Center for Health (NARCH) Public Health Research Academy and CDC’s Inspire Campaign: Building Stronger Pathways to Public Health programs for Native youth and young adults living in the Pacific Northwest

    The NW Native American Research Center for Health (NARCH) is a federally-funded program designed to increase health research capacity for tribal people nationwide. To that end, the NPAIHB has hosted a research center for the past 20 years. The program includes both research projects and training programs that are designed to increase the research capabilities of tribal people who work for their own (or other) tribe/s or tribal organizations, among students (high school to graduate students), and among academicians who are of tribal heritage.The NARCH Public Health Research Academy is an extension of the NW NARCH to include tribal high school juniors and senior students. This population health sciences interactive research introductory program uses public health challenges and diseases of tribal health importance to introduce diverse topics in population health scientific research. The goal is to nurture and inspire future Native public health professionals.Funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health.

    NPAIHB’s Washington Youth Sexual Healthcare (WYSH) Project in partnership with the Washington State Department of Health’s (DOH) Youth Sexual Health Innovation Network, works to improve youth’s access to and experience with sexual health care in I/T/U (Indian Health Service, Tribal and Urban) clinic settings, including sexual health services for 2SLGBTQ teens and young adults.FY 2020-2023. Funded by the Office of Population Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services “Tier 2 Innovation and Impact Network Grants: Achieving Optimal Health and Preventing Teen Pregnancy in Key Priority Areas.” Key Priority Area: Youth Access to and Experience with Sexual Health Care. Among other tasks includes working with the NPAIHB COVID-19 communications team to identify priority COVID-19 campaign topics and key stakeholders in order to develop messaging strategies, select appropriate messaging strategies, review campaign materials created by network partners for cultural relevance to AI/AN population, and support content development for the NPAIHB social media channels.

    THRIVE (Tribal Health-Reaching Out InVolves Everyone) THRIVE works to reduce suicide rates among AI/AN living in the Pacific Northwest by increasing tribal capacity to prevent suicide and by improving regional collaborations. Specifically, the project provides ASIST and QPR training; develops social marketing and media prevention campaigns, host annual THRIVE youth conference, and; increases tribal capacity to prevent suicide using the Zero Suicide Model, the Healing of the Canoe curriculum, Responding to Concerning Post on Social Media, and other evidence-based interventions. THRIVE supports Project Red Talon (PRT) in its development and dissemination of teen-friendly multimedia health resources via. www.wernative.org. These programs are designed to meet the needs of AI/AN youth that face challenging topics, and allow them to take control of their own health.FY 2015-2020. Funded by the Substance Abuse and Suicide Prevention (SASP) grant from the Indian Health Service (IHS), formerly known as MSPI, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Garrett Lee Smith youth suicide prevention grant.
