Child Rights Advocacy Intern
In January 2017 I took part in a 6 week internship with FMSI, a child rights NGO based in Rome. My role consisted primarily of researching the implementation and effectiveness of recommendations made by the Committee for the Rights of the Child (CRC) regarding children's rights in certain countries, and drafting submissions for the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) summarising these situations, and suggesting recommendations for the further advancement of children's rights. During my time with FMSI, I also spent two weeks in Switzerland, attending and reporting on meetings of the CRC in Geneva, at the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights (OHCHR) for FMSI. I received credit for this internship through my Arts degree, and achieved a HD for the work I undertook in conjunction with my internship. The most notable of this work was writing a 4,000 word Research essay, titled 'Female Genital Mutilation, Child brides and Trokosi: The convergence of Children’s Rights and Women’s Rights in Africa' which was rooted in the research I had completed and the CRC meetings which I attended through my placement with FMSI.
