The JET Programme has continued to grow, welcoming over 5,000 participants from 40 countries.Participants in the program selected for their adaptability and professionalism come from various native English-speaking countries and are given the opportunity to serve in government offices and public/private elementary, junior, and senior high schools. The program is conducted by local authorities and organizations in cooperation with the Japanese government and is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA); the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology (MEXT); and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication (MIC).My placement includes one junior high school and two elementary schools.Responsibilities:- Collaborating with Japanese teachers to plan and conduct 20 classes per week for more than 1,000 students- Designing and implementing various lesson plans and activities while being aware of students’ learning abilities, interests, and areas that needed improvement-Coaching Junior High School students entering Prefecture-wide English speech contests. Several times a week I work with students on memorization techniques, presentation skills, and improving speed and pronunciation - Encouraging students to use and improve their English ability by engaging them in conversation inside and outside of class- Introducing students to American cultural aspects during lesson plans while also comparing/contrasting those to Japanese culture-Using Japanese language every day to effectively communicate with both Japanese teachers and students

As a grant writing intern for Riverview gardens, I spent 11 hours/week working with the Assistant Director and other staff members to research new grant opportunities and draft grant requests. This internship encouraged thinking creatively about funding sources for a non-profit with an innovative mission of providing jobs-training to those with barriers to stable employment, including at-risk youth and previously incarcerated individuals.
