Celia Evans joined the Engineering Learning Initiatives team in 2020 after almost 20 years teaching and researching in the natural sciences as professor of Ecology at Paul Smith’s College. After an undergraduate degree in Biology at Humboldt State University, Evans completed a Master of Science in Botany at the University of Toronto, Canada, a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Dartmouth College, and fulfilled a one-year postdoc in Science Education at the University of New Hampshire. Having consistently used and studied engaged learning pedagogy, Evans is convinced that student-centered, active-learning pedagogy works to facilitate all levels of cognition for all sorts of learners in all disciplines. Her areas of expertise include engaged learning strategies, creating and assessing learning objectives, international collaborations in STEM, strategic planning, collaborative partnership building, and ecology. Evans is excited to be part of the ELI team, and aims to collaboratively facilitate the continual improvement of learning outcomes in the College!

We help students, faculty and staff to develop a broader, more inclusive perspective of community, society, our world and its citizens. So that all can thrive, we nurture successful academic and social experiences while building global awareness by encouraging discussion and reflection about how “our own place” is related to global human and ecological communities.

Selected to work with the Assistant Provost and a committee of faculty to streamline, organize, and develop timelines and processes to support 3, 6-year cycle assessment processes (Program Assessment, Program Review, and Integrated General Education Assessment). (September 2018 – Present)

Campus Fulbright Liaison: Inform faculty about opportunities and deadlines for various Fulbright Scholar Programs and meet personally to help faculty understand the most effective methods to support the development of Fulbright proposals on campus. (July, 2016 – Present)Fulbright Program Advisor (FPA): Develop, implement and maintain a PSC internal process and timeline, in coordination with the Fulbright Program process, by which graduating students develop proposals and apply for Fulbright Student Grants. (May 2018 – Present)

International Programs Coordinator: Facilitate the development, coordination and dissemination of a comprehensive vision and set of best practices for International courses, under the office of the Provost. Assess common international programs goals for accreditation, updating and unifying practices and convening involved faculty and staff to build a comprehensive program. (July 2017 – Present)International Programs Advisor: Assisted the Provost by advising faculty and students on options for international study, helping faculty develop proposals that meet requirements and timelines for Faculty-led Study abroad programs. Developed assessment tools and other materials/guidelines to support faculty; worked with the Diversity/Inclusion Committee on campus to integrate students who have studies abroad into the discussion and activities which promote diversity and tolerance on campus. Develop curricula and teach 12-15 contact hours per semester (average number of students per semester ranges between 90 and 125). Courses currently taught include: General Ecology, Wetlands Ecosystems and Management, Capstone Proposal Planning, Plant Physiology, International Winter Ecology, International Freshwater and Marine Ecology. Previously taught courses include: Watershed Management, Physiological Ecology, Ecosystem Ecology, and Natural Habitat Interpretation. Advise 25 Natural Science Department students annually on schedule choices, major and minor degree decisions, academic success support and advice.

Developed and guided student stewards in research regarding Eurasian watermilfoil, wetland habitat, Odonate diversity and abundance, salamander habitat and body condition, and other science projects as appropriate to the mission of the program. Collaborated with students including ultimate responsibility for final research reports for program Annual Reports. (Summer 2008 – 2012)
