About Celia Evans
I am a passionate educator and researcher. I have been practicing teaching and learning for over 25 years. My areas of expertise are ecology, engaged learning, STEM education, peer education, international programs, research, assessment, strategic planning, and collaborative partnership building. I facilitate student-centered pedagogy and objectives-driven, evidence-supported practices in teaching and collaborations. I am a Fulbright scholar and Fulbright Specialist in STEM and peer education. I have also successfully mentored many undergraduates as they developed and completed undergraduate research.One of my strengths is facilitating cooperation and developing collaborations around shared interest. As of January 2020, I am Associate Director, Eng. Learning Initiatives at the Cornell University College of Engineering. I work with graduate and undergraduate peer educators to enhance learning outcomes in engineering courses through training evidence-based, impactful pedagogy, and to develop leadership skills in our educators. I work to build relationships among programs and people with shared purpose. I have facilitated assessment at the course and program levels, and developed, implemented, and consulted on experiential tutoring workshops. I have participated in and lead strategic planning. I am on the committee to increase internationalization in the College. Powerful engaged learning happens by interacting through collaborative disciplinary study, shared development and communication. I have initiated and maintained strong STEM education and ecological collaborations. I have worked with colleagues in Siberia (Fulbright 2012) and taken students to the Altai Republic twice. I have co- developed, and led winter and summer upper division courses with Moscow State University Biology Faculty. These experiences have been transformative for students and for my own professional and personal development.Recently, my areas of strength have expanded into creating engagement in the online classroom and training educators through online workshops that model those practices. CurrentCelia Evans joined the Engineering Learning Initiatives team in 2020 after almost 20 years teaching and researching in the natural sciences as professor of Ecology at Paul Smith’s College. After an undergraduate degree in Biology at Humboldt State University, Evans completed a Master of Science in Botany at the University of Toronto, Canada, a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Dartmouth College, and fulfilled a one-year postdoc in Science Education at the University of New Hampshire. Having consistently used and studied engaged learning pedagogy, Evans is convinced that student-centered, active-learning pedagogy works to facilitate all levels of cognition for all sorts of learners in all disciplines. Her areas of expertise include engaged learning strategies, creating and assessing learning objectives, international collaborations in STEM, strategic planning, collaborative partnership building, and ecology. Evans is excited to be part of the ELI team, and aims to collaboratively facilitate the continual improvement of learning outcomes in the College!

Courses currently taught include: General Ecology, Wetlands Ecosystems and Management, Capstone Proposal Planning, Plant Physiology, International Winter Ecology, International Freshwater and Marine Ecology.
