Research Scientist/Engineer II, The Center for Conservation Biology, University of Washington• Develop, optimize, and manage the Tracking Poached Elephant Ivory project which encompasses: coordination of world-wide sample acquisition; chain of custody; optimization and development of DNA extraction and PCR assays from ivory, tissue, hair and feces samples; data organization and reports; PCR amplify nuclear (microsatellite) and mitochondrial DNA; run PCR products on an ABI automated gene sequencer for fragment analysis; use a variety of computer software programs to analyze DNA for structure, variability, population and evolutionary characteristics; contributing author to peer reviewed publications. • Continuous work flow process improvement to optimize high-throughput; Skilled in large sample processing and data output/organization. • World expert on wildlife forensic methods to track the origin of poached elephant ivory. Procedures and methods are now being emulated in other laboratories around the world.• Supervise/train/manage lab members (PhD graduate students, MS graduate students, staff, and volunteers). • Conduct operations of the Center’s DNA and hormone laboratories: make reagents, order supplies/equipment, track budgets, organize projects, contributing author.
