New York Hand Surgery is a high volume surgical practice that evaluates over 70 patients per day. As a trained medical assistant, I work directly with both the physician and the PA. My daily responsibilities include phlebotomy procedures, dressing changes, taking X-rays, preparing orders for diagnostic studies and writing physical or occupational therapy scripts. I also assist with all front and back office scheduling, including working with worker’s compensation cases as well as obtaining prior authorizations for various procedures.

San Leandro Family Medical Group is the practice where I performed my phlebotomy externship. Working under the supervision of the lab specialist, I successfully completed more than 100 venipunctures in 40 hours, becoming proficient with both butterfly and straight needle blood draws. While there, I ensured the order-of-draws was followed and specimens were labeled correctly. I also collected finger stick blood draws and urine samples for analysis. Lastly, I was responsible for centrifuging samples and preparing the tubes for testing.

At 24 years old, I became the general manager of a 450 seat beer garden in the Uptown neighborhood of Oakland. In this capacity, I was an integral member of a start-up management team in an unproven market location, which transformed the business into the “Best Beer Garden” in the Bay Area with annual sales exceeding $8M in their first year. I learned how to manage a yearly budget, control labor costs, plan for health inspections, and grew sales. Using our location to my advantage, I made it our mission to coordinate monthly community events that helped support local businesses and charities.As a general manager, I managed all aspects of daily operations to ensure guest satisfaction and continued growth of the business while directing, training, mentoring, and leading the management team. Leading a staff of over 100 employees, I learned how important it was to build a cohesive team. I also established clear performance expectations and maintained these standards through training, coaching, developing, and careful hiring of staff that embodied our company standards. I coordinated staff meetings and executed all performance evaluations in order to provide constructive feedback to my employees.

At American Bone Health, I helped coordinate various events throughout the year, including our main event, Stepping Out Strong. This event is their largest community-based screening campaign of the year to support the National Council on Aging during Fall Prevention Week.The event helps educate senior citizens in our communities about the importance of bone health. I got to work directly with our elderly patients who were at risk for falling and helped teach them exercises and techniques to reduce their fall risk. We also evaluated their risk for osteoporosis by ordering bone density scans.
