About Celia Strickland

I am lucky to have experienced a wide and varied career. Some of the companies I have worked for are: The Environment Agency, The NHS, HM Courts & Tribunal Services, The Royal Voluntary Service, a Financial Planning company (Shore Financial Planning), Estate Agency (Gribble, Booth & Taylor), Adecco for BT and the Royal Navy. Finally not forgetting to mention that I ran my own hairdressing business successfully for over 12 years. My best work experience was working for the Environment Agency, when based in Lincoln as Regional Flood & Coastal Committee Secretariat for Lincolnshire & Northamptonshire. I am delighted now to be back working for the Environment Agency again, as part of a national team, PCM and am based in Peterborough. Great people, great culture, working hard, learning and collaborating with our partners to deliver a range of innovative projects to help protect people and wildlife. I had 3 years overseas as a 'time out' from my regular life, accompanying my family on a once in a lifetime opportunity living in Cyprus. I am now happily settled after these adventures in Lincolnshire and have a fantastic network of friends. I like to challenge myself and in recent years (in my 3 years ‘time out’) have done so by learning to swim and completed a charity skydive raising over 800 Euros for SSAFA. I also gained my FS in Mathematics Level 2 award and have gained my CIPD Level 3 award in HR. I am currently learning Spanish and brushing up on French and German in my spare time as love learning. I am hoping to complete some more formal learning within my workplace in the next year to progress in my career. I enjoy listening to others and giving their confidence a boost if they need a bit of a lift or indeed if they just need a chat. People often confide in me and I take pride in this as people value my integrity. I am also a Well-being Lead at work and am passionate about this work.I am thoroughly enjoying my work journey!

I tried to ensure that projects submitted their contract paperwork on time, i.e. invoices, reports and other governance and items as requested. I spent much of my time checking for updates with the projects and chasing up outstanding information. I was also the first point of contact for our projects and tried to help them to resolve any issues they had and also with various queries and information requests. In my team I also provided secretarial support for my Manager and Director. Duties included: arranging meetings, minute taking, typing, assisting in drafting and creating various documents including application forms, contractual documentation, proof-reading, arranging travel and events, logging and updating records constantly (via many large and complex spreadsheets). From time to time there were one off tasks and projects which I was asked as part of the team to contribute to. I always looked at reviewing processes and policies to ensure that the department was working as efficiently as possible. I often worked with team members on short-term tasks to ensure deadlines were met. This was a challenging and varied role which I enjoyed. However, I felt the time was right to leave this role. I now hope to gain more experience and increased responsibility in my new role within the Trust. Show less

I started up this business from scratch. I marketed my business and put in lots of hours to ensure it's success. I started mobile hairdressing and in Year 1 business grew slowly but steadily. In Year 2 there was a real increase and I had almost doubled the first year's turnover. By Year 3 I was working 60 hours per week and could not sustain this and could not take on any new business. The next step was to acquire a salon. I had to convert an empty shop into a salon. I designed the salon, got all the salon equimpent and units installed, organised painting and decoration of the premises and other tasks/items which were organised included: plumbing, signage, new locks, flooring, design of reception area furniture, display stand for retail products, window display, till, card payment facilities, refreshments area, toilets and washing facilites, designed logo and stationery. I had to recruit and hire employees. For most of the time I had: 2 employed staff, 1 self-employed member of staff and frequently a young person on work experience. As well as maintaing my client list I was responsible for the welfare and working conditions of my staff. I trained and developed them, taking 2 members of staff from junior positions to experienced stylists. I also liaised with the College Tutors to ensure my staff were on track with acheiving their qualifications. I was responsible for payroll and for my business accounts.Building and maintaining relationships with clients, local businesses, suppliers, stockists was and essential and integral part of running the business. After 5 years of running the salon at the commercial premises I decided to cut my overhead costs and to simplify the business (as I had 2 young children at this point). I then converted a room in my house. Show less
