I love the phrase “fearless curiosity.” I heard it on a Hidden Brain podcast, and it felt like I’d finally found the words to describe my career (and my life). I am fearlessly curious—I challenge the status quo, ask questions to understand, continuously learn, and foster the same in my teams.This curiosity has guided me throughout my career and my educational journey. Whether working at prestigious Ivy League behemoths like The Wharton School or small liberal arts institutions like Cabrini University, my teams and I focused on continuous improvement—for the organization and for ourselves. My desire to understand how organizations work, why employees act the way they do, and how the two interacted drove me to earn a PhD in organizational development. This doctoral program ignited a new question—why aren’t we doing more to improve the work experience for employees? I was sitting in a president’s cabinet meeting when that question hit me and changed the course of my career in the blink of an eye. I wanted to apply my newfound knowledge of organizational culture, dynamics, and employee-based self-esteem at a company that had a strong mission and unwavering ethics. So, after 15 years in higher education, after reaching a vice president position, after building my network at universities and colleges around the world…I left academia for a new adventure at Vanguard and haven’t looked back. At Vanguard, my teams and I follow our mission to give employees the information, knowledge, and tools to adapt and grow. It is incredibly fulfilling to see the positive impact we’ve had over the years by questioning the status quo and engaging in employee development. The results of fearless curiosity are peppered through my resume—double-digit increases in conversion rates, triple-digit increases in learning platform usage, and year-over-year improvements in people’s understanding of change. So, my question to you is, “why aren’t you asking ‘why?’ more often?”
