About Celia Newlands
Challenging the definition of success and leadership towards fulfilment, happiness and experience of life, by bringing perspective, connection and accountability to small business owners. Creating spaces to explore collaborative ways for success. After moving from Scotland to Brisbane in 2011, I set up Central Business Associates in 2015, to enable local businesses to have a new collaborative way to work together in the Brisbane Bayside area. It has become a community in the most authentic sense. My knowledge and understanding of the benefits of collaborative team building, the importance of customer service, and the impact and process of change, are all ideally suited to help small businesses and entrepreneurs enhance their skills in these areas. Initially, I created flexible workspaces to have a professional, shared environment to show how easily you can incorporate these business-changing processes into your business. Central Business Associates is no longer about the physical space - it is about the collaborative community which resulted from the provided environment. The ongoing relationships which have developed between local specialist small businesses since 2015 have created trust, connection and team-building, where previously most worked independently. We now have groups of people who present as collaborative teams to win clients together. Clients love the opportunity to get all the support services they need, from other local, trusted small businesses. Locals working with locals whenever possible, is our goal – Community and Collaboration, over Competition. Drawing upon over 25 years’ personal experience in the following areas - Small Business Management | Customer Service | Change Management | Community Building | Entrepreneurship | Helpdesk Management | Business Improvement | Innovation | Small Business | Research & Development | Business Development | Business Retention | Account Management | Administration | Recruitment | Staff Management | Training | Management Consulting, I've worked in Blue-chip companies, Government Departments, Family-owned businesses, Not-for-profits, and since 2006 have been running my own businesses. All of this experience allows me to serve as a Virtual General Manager for your small business - helping you organise & grow your business. General Manager, Collaboration Consultant
CurrentCollaboration/Community Manager:As part of a collective business community, I help encourage & develop new beneficial business relationships, as well as strengthening existing collaborations, forming small teams of connected businesses who 'work together to grow together'. Blog: https://umbrellaspaces.blogspot.com/General Manager: With the community now established, my focus is now around facilitating growth within our community, through business process development and consolidation. Before running my own business, I spent many years setting up & managing Customer Service and Telesales Departments - including improving employee performance & morale through appraisals, training & development.I can help you create effective teams with multiple skillsets, attract & retain your ideal clients & employees, & ultimately achieve your goals. I do this by encouraging you to enhance your business offerings to your customers (Internal AND External).Continued training in Psychology, Customer Service, Change Management, Marketing, Sales and Mentoring has further developed my effectiveness as a General Manager. Customer Experience & Customer Care are fast becoming a way to stand out from the crowd – do you truly know how your business is perceived by your customers? I want to help you cultivate a loyal community who will become your best advocates! If you are in a business rut, or going through a growth phase, & feel overwhelmed - trying to map & build processes, provide & understand reports, and ultimately, get clarity and purpose - let's talk, and see how I can help.
Community Manager
As Community Manager, I connected many of our members with successful referrals within their first week! Some are still working together, since 2013!I love running my own business - but in over 15 years of doing so, I've heard so many stories similar to my own..... "I find myself emptying the dishwasher/ hanging out the washing/ deciding what's for dinner/ (insert your own distraction here)...""I miss having colleagues with expertise to help me in areas I'm not as knowledgeable in - Excel, Finance, Web design, Marketing, Admin (insert your pain point here...)..." After lots of research, I saw a gap in the market to solve all these problems, and more. I opened a suburban Flexible Workspace in 2015. 6 years later, I had hosted well over 100 businesses & consultants, in professional meeting rooms, boardrooms, coworking desks & private offices.Since I began networking in the local area in 2013, I've been helping to create & nurture relationships between local small businesses. Building trust, and learning about all the amazing specialist consultants & contractors that are within our local community, I work closely with different groups of collaborative individuals who can come together and help provide the services you need. To enhance and grow your business. In 2021, I was excited to move to a shared office locally with some of those collaborative partners, in a stunning new location, where the focus shifted to the collaborative & growth areas of my expertise. I help those I work alongside, as well as other local consultants & contractors, to proactively network & collaborate, to enhance and grow all of their businesses & capabilities. With a firm belief that flexible & collaborative working environments will continue to become more commonplace, I continue to promote the benefits - to help everyone live a more balanced & flexible life - encompassing work, life and sufficient time to recharge. Director
CurrentThe Sage Room is a collective of small businesses working together, as highly independent and interdependent businesses, to grow each and all of our businesses, whilst expanding our impact.
General Manager
CurrentBeginning with business support as an Executive Assistant for Amy, over time my role has expanded through marketing and research, and eventually to the strategic growth of Nurturing Confidence. Through my experience in corporate management, and more recently within small business management, I have been able to help with the overall strategy for marketing and overall sustainable growth. Working with Amy and the team, we cohesively created new paths to grow the reach of Amy's amazing work - to individuals looking to step up their career confidence, - small or large teams who want to become more resilient and dynamic, and - help everyone be able to communicate more effectively as leaders. More recently, the team and the business have expanded, and my role is now focussed specifically on General Management, working in close collaboration with the rest of the management team, including the new online courses being offered to a worldwide audience.
Blogger
Currentwebsite: https://www.soimarriedanextrovert.com/Started a blog, named after my favourite movie "So I Married an Axe Murderer"... I only recognised myself as an introvert in around 2013, and spent the next 3 years recovering from the secondary, more shocking realisation, that in 2002, I had married an extrovert! (or extravert, depending on your preference) Learning to navigate our very different personalities, and understanding my kryptonite-like energy, was really life-changing for me/us, but also lots of fun, with many comedic moments and situations. I love to write, so it seemed like a good idea 😊. It's taken me almost 6 years to create a flexible life that allows me time to write, and in the process, I've also started writing two books - one for teens, the other around my growing up and trying to 'fit in' to an extrovert world..
Flexible Working Day Ambassador
CurrentFlexible working requires flexible mindsets and flexible work styles. It is about people working in ways that allow them to achieve their best and for employers to reap the rewards. Making the most of employees means supporting innovative and diverse work arrangements - from the night owl starting and finishing late, job-sharing and part-time work, to name a few. Over the past 50 years, there have been significant changes in technology, our family structures, communication, recreation, entertainment and job roles - and this is going to continue to rapidly evolve. But work structures - hours, location, and work practices - have not kept pace. Now is the time for working flexibly to align with the rest of the changes in society.Join the conversation via social media. #FlexWorkFullLife #GenderFlexGap #TackleFlexismFor me, flexibility has been part of my working life since 2006 when I started working for myself, and I now encourage others to find ways to make their life and work blend in a flexible and balanced way. So many jobs have the potential for flexibility, and I am delighted we are moving towards this being a reality for more and more people each year. Lets keep talking about it and sharing it, to keep it being talked about in the media and in HR departments worldwide!
