About Celia Ojeda Martínez
My journey began at sea, not at an office.Presently I manage projects which have an impact on our world’s sustainability and equity. Although it may seem idyllic, let me assure you this idea is what drives Greenpeace every day. On a personal level, I am committed to promoting social justice, protecting the environment, and bringing forth a new model for female leaders, one where women need not be the embodiment of perfection, but where their actions have an impact. What am I working on now?. I'm leading the Biodiversity Unit at Greenpeace Spain, where we work on issues like oceans, forests, water, agriculture, factory farming, fires and biodiversity protection. I work on the theory and logic side of the project, on designing the strategy, on organizing tactical actions, and also on coordinating the international actions we carried out with the help of local teams around the world.Greenpeace is one of the most renowned NGOs, with 3.2 million supporters worldwide and over 125,000 members in Spain. We are an environmental and pacifist organization, economically and politically independent. We use direct, non-violent action to draw public attention to global environmental problems and to promote real solutions for a green and peaceful future. What is my working ethic? I base my work on the principles of quality, creativity, determination, efficiency, and yes, I strive for all our actions to have an impact. My #LeadingByActionsNotLooks style allows me to create a trusting relationship with my team. I am mindful of their diversity, promote their strengths, and understand their circumstances. In addition, I am personally committed to making visible a new female leader model; one that is not a picture-perfect version, but a real flesh-and-blood woman that makes an impact with every one of her actions.I rely on my more than 15 years of professional experience to develop my work. I have extensive experience in developing new projects, taking risks, and leading teams with empathy and respect. I have a Ph.D. in Marine Biology and a Master in Non-Profit Management. Will you join us and help create a better future?

Strategic Global Project Leader | Greenpeace International
I have been a working member of this environmental and pacifist organization for 12 years. From 2020 to 2022 I co-lead an strategic global project to change cities. I participated in the conceptualization and theorization aspects. I designed goal-oriented strategies, created and coordinated tactical actions, and organized international activities that Greenpeace executes with the help of local teams and volunteers distributed worldwide. The two projects leaded and co-leaded allowed us to have an impact on two specific areas:1. Hack Your City Project:Our goal is to make our cities more sustainable; to do so, we collaborate with urban movements that sprung naturally. Greenpeace supports these initiatives that aim to turn our cities into more sustainable spaces. Greenpeace believes and defends that cities belong to the People, not to bankers, or real estate developers.I lead an international team with people in offices in Colombia, Argentina, Italy, The Netherlands, Mexico, and Spain. We’ve launched several campaigns that already have had an impact and are making a difference; for example the #REstart_ campaign, where I developed a post-COVID city model and collaborated with the team on the visual project.2. Changes of Mentality Project:Our objective is to influence the mindset of the population and of political and business stakeholders whose decisions highly influence environmental and world peace issues. This project is part of the strategic lines of our organization. A multidisciplinary team with a shared purpose carry out our direct action campaigns, where creativity, action, speediness, and problem-solving are some of the essential skills that come into play.
Consumption Program Manager | Greenpeace Spain
Design, Manage, and Coordinate Greenpeace Consumer Program, which comprises the following campaigns: Plastics, Meat and Food, Mobility, and Fashion.I went from being an "Oceans Campaigner" to leading a new program. Greenpeace had previously worked on consumption issues, with many campaigns incorporating calls to action, but this was the first time the organization devoted a specific program to this problem. My job was to design a strategy for all the campaigns comprising the project and develop a unified and coherent narrative. I introduced Greenpeace Spain to different concepts, such as changes in mentality and how to measure it.I worked on the strategy of each campaign with the team, planned and helped meet deadlines, and led public events, creativity meetings and team meetings. Although my post was tactical, I was also hands-on with the campaigns and supervised execution deadlines. The challenge was to provide the best work environment, giving people the space they needed, and promoting their work-related skills both individually and as a team. The team included ten individuals from different departments in the organization. I am proud of our evolution. We became a happy, friendly team capable of solving internal conflicts and, most importantly, always willing to accept a #challenge.
Ocean Program Manager | Greenpeace Spain
My first position in Greenpeace was oceans campaigner. I worked for the whale campaign and the Mediterranean marine reserve campaign. A few years later, we launched a European project aimed at reforming the EU Common Fisheries Policy, a project I ended up leading and which provided Greenpeace a means to push for political reforms.During this period I participated in five sea expeditions:A Marine Reserves expedition in the Mediterranean, an expedition in Malta for the Bluefin tuna campaign, two one-month expeditions in the North Atlantic to protest against trawling, and in the Mediterranean I led an expedition to promote artisanal fishing and protest against plastic pollution.Working on a Greenpeace ship involves leading two teams, the one in your office or the one you collaborate with on the project, and the ship crew team. In such a confined space where everyone is on top of each other, achieving campaign objectives not only depends on a good strategy but also on maintaining a good working atmosphere. Even if you have every plan and strategy outlined, when you work on a ship, you must make tactical, strategic, and legal decisions in a matter of seconds.I managed a fantastic team of roughly 30 individuals from 9 different countries. For years our work focused on fisheries management and the relevant legislation. We designed several campaigns that had a significant impact; we also maintained direct and regular communication with political and business leaders who had a lot of action and decision-making power. The responsibilities of the OCEAN Program Manager includes the Design, Management, and Coordination of Campaigns to protect marine ecosystems, as well as maintaining communication with stakeholders and acting as spokesperson to the media. The work focuses on Spain and Europe.
Marine Biology Scientist
The University of Alicante hired me to coordinate a team of research scientists and study the effectiveness of Marine Reserves and the management of fisheries in these areas. I decided to write my Doctoral Thesis on the same subject while working at the University. We selected social, economic, and ecological indicators for 3 Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to evaluate the effectiveness of their protection. The research was done under the framework of the EMPAFISH project which was a project funded by the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7).
