Veronica primarily served as Deputy Project Manager (PM) on the Harris County Flood Control District’s Modeling Assessment & Awareness Project (MAAPnext), a flood hazard assessment project using updated technology and methods to produce the most comprehensive set of flood hazard maps for Harris County to date. MAAPnext incorporates the study of previously unmapped overland and non-riverine flooding areas to provide the community with a better understanding of flood risk. In her role as Deputy PM, she assisted with daily project management duties, led the HDR quality management team, and managed earned value reporting along with other aspects of project controls. She also provided business development/marketing support on pursuits throughout the state.

During her first semester in graduate school, Veronica also had the opportunity to intern with the Southwest District Office. In this role, she became acquainted with Florida's environmental compliance regulations and various permitting processes administered through the District for the eight counties within its jurisdiction: Citrus, Hardee, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk.Through the direction of the Environmental Administrator, she implemented a Waste Cleanup Program initiative to formally close over 40 inactive, Hillsborough County landfills that were not in remediation or the state's Brownfields Program. To accomplish this goal, Veronica leveraged her professional engineering experience with knowledge gained on soil & groundwater contaminant levels, researched data she acquired from local government agencies, and compiled her recommendations to administration for closure based upon those findings. Additional key competencies included: OCULUS, MapDirect, GIS, and groundwater/surface water flow modeling.

Veronica was a project manager on the San Pedro Creek Improvements Project (SPCIP) - a $125M drainage, flood control, and linear park transformation in the heart of America's seventh-largest city. She coordinated water, electric, and telecommunication utility relocations ($7M) by leading a diverse team of design consultants. Moreover, she conducted construction progress meetings and worked with intergovernmental partners to acquire $1M in drainage and utility easements. She also initiated an ecosystem restoration feasibility study & cost analysis for Phase 3 of the SPCIP, culminating in a technical memo to local funding partners which incorporated U.S. Army Corps of Engineers objectives such as natural channel design, habitat restoration, and recreational improvement. As a result, the City of San Antonio allocated $3M for linear hike & bike trails along the lower reach of San Pedro Creek. Because of her talent as an effective communicator, she fostered interpersonal relationships with project stakeholders, contractors, consultants, and citizens through public meetings and community engagement. In her first year with the Watershed Engineering department, she worked on a mixed bag of projects in Bexar & Wilson Counties, Texas - from floodplain modeling for FEMA map revisions to in-stream capital improvement pilot projects for trash and floatables mitigation.

Veronica was a consultant on three major wastewater & stormwater asset management contracts for several Air Force installations throughout the U.S. and Japan. She coordinated and conducted field surveys with a team, performing asset inventories, condition assessments, comprehensive GIS mapping, and geodatabase updating. She also analyzed and interpreted flow monitoring data to identify inflow-infiltration impacts on collection systems that could lead to environmental compliance issues, such as sanitary sewer overflows. Her team then developed investment prioritization models and sustainable utility asset management tools for wastewater/stormwater master plans and capital improvements. Moreover, Veronica provided environmental engineering field support during remedial action at Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant-46, a 190-acre area within an EPA Superfund site. She planned and coordinated hazardous and non-hazardous solid waste disposal of contaminated investigation-derived waste from the site in accordance with RCRA Subtitles C and D, respectively. She developed cost analyses for waste transport to the appropriate landfills, determined the fate of disposal, and coordinated logistics with environmental services contractors. Due to her solid background in soil mechanics and hydrogeology, Veronica was also tasked with maintaining certain quality assurance/quality control components of the installation-wide work plan. To accomplish this, she audited groundwater well construction details and associated geotechnical boring logs.

Veronica planned and conducted environmental field support tasks during multiple scrubber construction and expansion projects at Southern Company power generation plants. She designed stormwater conveyance systems for coal combustion by-product disposal facilities and prepared solid waste management plans/site acceptability reports to address strategic planning and environmental compliance requirements. She routinely collected soil and bedrock samples, generated boring logs summarizing the data, and provided geotechnical/foundation recommendations for a variety of infrastructure.Veronica also managed arsenic contamination testing at substation remediation projects for Gulf Power Company. She co-directed site cleanups, providing technical guidance for contractors and emphasizing a strong safety culture on each of her projects. Upon completion of remedial action, she assisted with technical report preparation to address Florida DEP regulatory compliance requirements.

During her years as an engineering undergraduate, Veronica assisted with data collection and evaluation on numerous engineering field support projects at Southern Company power generation facilities. She compiled data on chemical leaching characteristics of coal combustion byproducts for industry research studies, performed hydrologic studies for ash ponds, and outlined findings in technical reports. She greatly assisted senior engineers during Federal ash pond inspections by organizing and digitizing historical files and drawings.Her geotechnical engineering responsibilities included evaluating foundation settlement and soil stress parameters for a proposed new generation site, modeling subsurface conditions with geotechnical software, and generating drilling logs for numerous subsurface exploration projects.Veronica first gained experience with GIS at this time. She worked with field technicians to inspect and map electric power transmission structures. Her team also collected grounding data for transmission lines which ultimately fed an integral maintenance and operational database.

Veronica's primary responsibility as a sergeant and medical laboratory technician (MOS 91/68K) was to mentor, train, and lead soldiers. She coordinated training as a director in medical unit operations and played pivotal roles in establishing large-scale blood donor operations at multiple military installations during Operation Enduring Freedom (Fort Sam Houston, TX; Fort Benning, GA; and McGuire AFB, NJ to name a few). Her medical duties included donor screening and phlebotomy, blood typing, and unit preparation for overseas shipping.
