About Ceri Almrott

As a lecturer in Product Design at TU Dublin I use the knowledge I gained during my years as a design consultant to teach Design practice to the next generation of industrial designers in Ireland. Additionally to teaching I am currently researching design pedagogy and issues surrounding Identity and culture in design.Previously I ran my own design consultancy in the UK and worked with inventors, innovative startups, SME's and engineering companies to bring their ideas to market. I have worked in the furniture, home decor, industrial and consumer product sectors and have created work which has been protected through Design Rights and international patents.

In the main I worked on the Quatreau Tap bringing the current design to market and developing the product with a view to better customer satisfaction and more efficient production and assembly. Working with key suppliers under the design for cost and design for manufacture methodologies I sought to improve the profitability of product for the company. As well as being responsible for product development within the organisation I also introduced a design language which expressed a detailed idea in keeping with the themes and identity of the brand as a whole. Working with this design language I developed a product development strategy intended to build market awareness of the range whilst capturing increased market share.Within my role I identified and sourced key suppliers whilst managing a small UK and international supply chain developing new designs whilst producing small batch production of current tap products. I oversaw overall production of the range and the quality management of the final parts and assembly. I also visited, on a regular basis, all manufacturers and external production to ensure that the product was produced and finished to the supplied brief. In my wider development role I worked with the senior management to scope and implement a wider brand repositioning which built on the strengths of the company over the previous twenty years whilst allowing movement in to new product areas. Within this role I identified new areas of business which supported wider divergence in to new and profitable areas of business.Overall I ensured that the Quatreau Product reached market, developed the under counter technology for better installation and produced a range of designs to expand the range and increase market share. I worked within a support team of the Site Engineering Department managing a maintenance database which was used to plan and maintain critical equipment. As well as this I undertook a varied range of graphic and spatial design projects. I also undertook a number of industrial design projects for the engineering department as well as projects for the Production and Research business Units. During my time at Novartis I designed a device in stainless steel for selecting the correct beakers for chemical experiments, a PTFE levelling spatula and a device for retrofitting a camera to a microscope test rig, I also designed a self adjusting sensor mount for the warehouse. The successful completion of these design tasks allowed me the opportunity to collaborate with designers within the inhalation device part of the company for my final year undergraduate project.During this period I also managed the running of the engineering stores and put in to place a number of projects to improve the operation of the facility focusing on maintaining stock levels and improving the location of stock to reduce item recovery times. I was heavily involved in purchasing on a day to day level and on a non stock level. I negotiated savings on a wide range of products and met with outside company representatives. The department also allowed me to undertake a number of project management roles, at one point I had a total budget of £75,000 for my projects. I believe that this was an impressive feat for a student who had only worked for the company for a few months. Show less
