During my collaboration with Professor Katheryn Russ, I had the invaluable opportunity to contribute to a research project that involved analyzing documents from political meetings with world leaders. Although the specific research question remains confidential, our team aimed to cross-reference these documents with lobbyists from the respective home countries to gauge governmental alignment.My primary responsibility was to develop a Python script that could convert over 1000 pages of PDF content into .txt format. One of the key challenges was automating the separation of these documents based on the country's statements. To accomplish this, we utilized fuzzy string matching techniques. Brainstorming with my team members, we identified specific strings that would help us segregate the documents effectively for countries like the US, Japan, Mexico, etc.To ensure the quality and accuracy of the converted data, I manually validated the text files against the original PDFs using simple search functions. Although I wasn't directly involved in the NLP aspect of the project, my work laid the foundation for advanced natural language processing to be conducted on these documents.This experience was transformative for me. It was my first time working on a research team, and the intellectual rigor involved in our meetings—discussing the nuances in our findings, the complications in the research, and the implications of how we organized the data—deepened my passion for research. It was a vivid demonstration of the kind of work I want to be involved in and has strongly influenced my career aspirations.
