This elective course exposes the students to the foundations of urbandevelopment including the opportunities and challenges in context of climatechange. Various topics that would be covered in the course are characteristics ofsustainable cities (smart cities), indicators for sustainable urban development,climate change and disaster management, making our cities safe and resilientthrough waste management, water management and transport management. Bestpractices from cities across the globe and case studies will be presented anddiscussed in context of challenges that have emerged recently in form of floods, airpollution, heat-waves, water-logging, waste management, and co-related publichealth risks The course shall specifically take up the case studies in severalmegacities: New York, Los Angeles, Beijing, Rio de Janeiro, London, Mumbai, and Lagos.We will look at key issues like physical location, proper sanitation, food security, and vector-borne diseases against the backdrop of climate change, and model its effect on the urbanpoor. For example, urban poor often inhabit the least desirable land, flood zones that areespecially susceptible to climate events. Further, extreme rainfall variability affects cropproduction, which impacts food prices, which impacts the poor the most. Frequent floodingalso tends to cause an increase in insect population, which causes an increase invectorborne diseases like chagas and malaria. Addressing the issues and challengesassociated with mitigating the effects of climate change is enormously difficult. However, thiscourse lays out a framework for action. By using established international standards thatprovide step-by-step guidance, along with a compelling business case for action, urbanenvironments that face harmful climate impacts can begin to systematically address theserisks. We will focus on developing a compelling business case, where cities across the worldcan begin to lay out a long-term plan for action.
