About Craig Fossella

I consider myself to be an instinctive, versatile, and resourceful leader with a long history of building outstanding teams and achieving record results. I also have been a thought leader in the beauty industry - I was a pioneer in the 1.9B ‘med spa’ industry, helped guide Bliss from a single location to arguably the most well known spa brand in the world, and opened a truly revolutionary day spa in San Francisco.As the owner of two beauty businesses back in 2012, I realized that the tech revolution was completely bypassing the staid beauty industry. Knowing the problems and failed solutions first hand, I set out to create a viable solution with the creation of juvu.me and later Beautified. Currently I help individuals, entrepreneurs, and hospitality groups achieve their dreams by creating unique and memorable spaces.

    After experiencing first hand the beauty & wellness industry’s declining profitability in the post-recession, post-Groupon world, I set out to do something about it. I found a partner in Agora Health that shared my vision: to create an online marketplace where users could find and book appointments in real time based on supply and demand pricing. In other words, I wanted to bring the price elasticity models of the airlines and hotels to the staid spa and beauty industry.I created a business plan, financial model, and pitch deck, as well as specified the user interface and functionality and tasked and oversaw the programmers. I brought this concept to three pitch competitions, two of which I won.

    After Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH) purchased the single location Bliss Spa in 1999, I was recruited to run the spa business, lead the expansion effort, and grow the spa brand beyond New York City. By the end of 2001 – a year in which we received over 123 articles or mentions in publications such as Vogue, InStyle, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Allure, W, Marie Claire, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, and Self – Bliss was arguably the most recognizable spa brand in the world.Financial achievements include revenue and NOI increases at the SoHo location in '00 of 34% and 20%, respectively, despite it being a mature business with a 95% utilization rate and a daily wait list for appointments. Revenues and NOI both increased 5% in '01 despite a major reduction in business and partial closing after the attacks of 9/11 (Revenue and income comparisons include only entities in operation for both full years, i.e. Comparisons between 1999 and 2000 do not include Bliss57 and comparisons between 2000 and 2001 do not include BlissLondon).

    Hired to help create, raise capital for, and spin off a retail division of Candela Corporation, a medical device manufacturer. What we ultimately created was the first of a category called the ‘Med Spa’, which today is a $2B industry. Within a year I had been promoted twice, culminating in my appointment as the head of the division, at the time the youngest VP in the public company's 30 year history. I inherited an eight figure loss which I brought to break even in two years. This was achieved by implementing severe cuts, closing one location, and personally taking over the day to day operations of the flagship Boston location.Despite the spa being a mature (15 year old) business, we grew spa revenues in Boston by 49% in ’98 and 112% in ’99, and increased Christmas gift certificate sales by 71% in ’98 and 43% in ’99 (all results exclusive of medical revenue). Much of the revenue increase in '99 was attributed to the fact that I negotiated the purchase of our largest competitor, a multi-million dollar business, for $2k by figuring out a way to satisfy over $400k of outstanding gift certificate holders while profiting on each transaction and without incurring any liability on the parent corp’s balance sheet.
