From our Johannesburg hub, I managed a specialist group of leading geological and mining professionals with broad based commodity resource and mining expertise. While able to react to specific customer needs, the team also offered recognized mining asset lifecycle service capability in the regional platinum group metals, gold, base metal and bulk commodity sectors.One of my priorities was to facilitate the expansion of services to the African mining industry, and to inform and support the broader Coffey business about the potential that the continent offers. At the time, ACU was an AIM, TSX and Botswana listed mineral exploration company set to bring its first copper-mine, Mowana, into production at its Dukwe Project. After 18 months, I was promoted to CEO and appointed to the main ACU Plc Board. I oversaw the transition from explorer to producer, managing organisational design, coordinating the EPCM phase of the project, mobilising a large scale mining contractor to prepare the pit for sustainable production and directing the regional exploration team. In developing company strategy and expansion potential, I led an underground scoping and prefeasibility project and the evaluation of the potential application of dense media separation (DMS) techniques to maximise metal recovery at Mowana.After completing my 3-year term of contract with ACU, in December 2009 I elected to pursue alternative business opportunities and independent advisory roles with select industry clients.
