About Carlos Morillo
Dr. Carlos Morillo began his research in materials science, nanotechnology, and tribology as an undergraduate at Simon Bolivar University (USB) in Venezuela in 2001. His advisor for his M.S. degree at USB was Prof. Joaquin Lira, an internationally respected expert in materials science. Through Prof. Lira’s contacts and assistance, Dr. Morillo was able to study as an exchange student at Sun Moon University in Korea, where he worked with Prof. Soo Wohn Lee. Dr. Morillo then returned to Venezuela in 2003, where he became a research assistant working on a project sponsored by the Venezuelan National Foundation for Science, Technology, and Innovation. In 2005, Dr. Morillo went to Japan to begin his doctoral studies at Kyushu University, where he worked with top experts in the field of materials science and tribology. After receiving his Ph.D. in 2009, Dr. Morillo worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology of Japan (AIST). He then took a position as a Research Associate at the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE) at the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2011, where he is currently employed. At CALCE, Dr. Morillo’s work focuses on materials analysis of lead-free solders, lithium-ion batteries, bearings, and electrolytic capacitors.
Listed skills include Characterization, Nanotechnology, Materials Science, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and 41 others.

Research Associate
Developed methodology for assessing the reliability of electro-mechanical devices.Evaluated electrolytic capacitors using analytical chemistry tools.Assessed mechanical properties of solder materials using nano-indentation in collaboration of Keysight Technologies (former Agilent Technologies)Examined printed circuit boards under corrosive environments.Studied deformations of contact mechanics using ANSYSFailure analysis of electronic componentsBasic CAD knowledgeAssisted in the management and review of the laboratory work of PhD and MS studentPerformed lab services for companies like Schlumberger, Ducommun, Teradyne, Microsoft and General Electric
Post-Doctoral Researcher
Worked in Hydrogenous (world class research institute), studying the transfer film of polymeric materials formed on the surface of austenitic stainless steel. Selected materials for the design and development of valve, compressor and mechanical sealing for hydrogen supply systems.Improved data analysis and acquisition of surface chemistry using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Auger Electron Spectroscopy.Selected valve and seal materials with high wear resistance and low price in hydrogenous environment, saving around 75% of the primary material for the design and development of these mechanical devices.Wrote research proposal resulting in $ 4 Mil to study the chemical surface of polymer transfer film formed by polymer mechanical sealing in hydrogen.
Research And Teacher Assitant
Assisted laboratory practices in Core Seminar to junior students in order to explain the fundamentals of tribology; wear; friction and lubrication, using a 4 ball-tribometer machine with different lubricants. Also studied the failure analysis of medical and mechanical devices. Developed alumina nanocomposites to enhanced working-life time of hip joint replacement using ceramic oxides. Fracture toughness of these alumina nanocomposites was 25% higher that non-reinforced alumina and consequently the wear volume was five times lower.
English Teacher
Research Assisant
Supervised researchers and wrote proposal for research grants, also worked with failure analysis, bio-compatibility, biomaterials and design and develoment of tribological rigs.Wrote research proposal to (FONACIT), Venezuelan National Fund for Science, Technology and Innovation resulting in $ 250,000.00 to study the interfacial adhesion and metalceramic interfaces for thermal barrier, heat disipators, microelectronics and biomedical applications.Design of bio-compatibility protocols for bioglasses using fibroblast cells. Since there was not a protocol for bio-compatibility for bioglasses in Venezuela this approach represents a unique and advanced development for the biomedicine in Venezuela.
Research Assitant
“Studied of the interfacial adhesion and metalceramic interfases for thermal barrier, heat disipators, microelectronics and biomedical applications” Sponsored by (FONACIT), Venezuelan National Fund for Science, Technology and Innovation.- Management of research projects.- Wrote proposal for research grants.
