I am an Assistant Professor in the Chair of Design Engineering at the University of Twente, where I have been working since 2020. With a PhD in Materials Science and multiple foreign languages, I have a strong academic background and a passion for learning and teaching. My research focuses on multi-material 3D printing and associated novel materials, which are key components of the Dutch government's sector plan for engineering. In addition to my academic role, I am a freelance Consultant and a Scientific Advisor for international manufacturing clients and research projects. I leverage my expertise in metallurgy, welding, and additive manufacturing to advise on business development, innovation, and quality assurance in 3D printing and other conventional material processes. I also develop and deliver workshops and training programs to raise awareness and understanding of the latest technologies and applications in this field. I am motivated by the challenge of creating impact for society and industry through research and innovation in 3D printing and additive manufacturing.

Assistant ProfessorUniversity Of Twente Sep 2020 - PresentResearch Delivering thought leadership on areas surrounding multi-material 3D printing and associated novel materials, I am the Chair of Design Engineering Research at the Department of Design Production and Management. This is a key component with the Dutch government’s "Academic excellence to create impact for society (sector plan Engineering).”Working with industry partners, I research multi-material Additive Manufacturing. Here, I research combinations of different alloys via Direct Energy Deposition, Ceramic + metal 3D printing via DLP process, multi-material 3D printing for Tissue Engineering Applications (extrusion and stereolithography based, hydrogels, metals, photopolymers). Overseeing multiple industrial research projects on advanced manufacturing and digitalisation, in English and Dutch, I work with an Advisor on 3D metal printing and materials research as well as being a Co-Supervisor of Ph.D. Candidates. I am a consultant on Additive Manufacturing for the Fraunhofer Project Centre, overseeing industrial research projects of high Technology Readiness Level (TRL). I also drive innovation across Fraunhofer Platform, I am an editorial board member of InnovatieNu magazine.Business / Proposal DevelopmentI have initiated six new AM research consortia in three years, driving industry innovation and change at national and European level. Here, I prepare proposals and lead on negotiations as well as identifying potential synergies and partnerships. LecturingSecuring outstanding educational outcomes for students, I teach “Materials Science 1”, “Materials and Manufacturing Processes” (BSc Mechanical Engineering) and “3D Printing - Processes and Use” (MSc Industrial Design Engineering). I am also the Project Leader on "3D printed Gradient Cellular Architectures for Tissue Engineering Applications" and the Scientific Project Coordinator and Work Package Leader on "Highly Precise, 3D Printed Functional Metal-ceramic Products for Electric Motor Applications." -
ConsultantGoulas Materials Technology Dec 2019 - PresentEnschede, Overijssel, NetherlandsLeveraging my expertise, I advise international manufacturing clients on business development in 3D printing and consulting on publicly funded research projects (national and EU) as well as providing consultancy on materials selection and processing, including heat treatments, welding, and additive manufacturing. Material behaviour and failure is also at the core of my expertise (eg. mechanical, fatigue, corrosion. I maximise knowledge sharing through developing and delivering workshops and training programmes for client teams.

Scientific AdvisorRamlab Oct 2020 - PresentProviding advisory on the planning and implementation of scientific and operational activities, I work within the Horizon 2020 “Grade2XL” Programme as well as advising on other topics of scientific interest. Here, I deliver effective leadership as a Product Owner, successfully developing and delivering eight end user demonstrators to outline product benefits to EU commission and other guests. I am also Fieldlab’s representative on the programme steering committee and technical task forces as well as the appointed work package leader on process development and demonstration. -
Postdoctoral ResearcherDelft University Of Technology Jun 2017 - Jun 2020Delft Area, NetherlandsManaging a self-defined research project entitled “Functionally Graded Materials by Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing.”, I worked with RAMLAB, on a project that was funded by the Dutch government. Here, I developed strong research outcomes, including leading welding spine and additive manufacturing group’s activities using the project to develop the foundation of RAMLAB’s success in producing high quality, certified metal parts. I also performed exploratory research on multi-material WAAM, with the findings being used as a foundation for the Grade2XL (Horizon 2020) programme.Overseeing end-to-end project lifecycles, I developed a robust hypothesis and authored a winning proposal as well as delivering research, analysis and guidance on real-world applications. These findings have been published in numerous scientific journal papers and I have also presented my findings at international conferences. Coaching and mentoring 10 master’s students, I ensured each student realised their potential and made useful contributions to their field of study. I also facilitated the knowledge transfer between researchers of the Aim2XL research programme and the main industrial partner, RAMLAB.Summary:The GradWAAM project explored the possibility of creating large-scale structural components with functionally graded metallurgical and mechanical properties by Wire + Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM). Using Additive Manufacturing enables the production of products-on-demand, delivering reduced time to market, reduced waste material and a lower carbon footprint. Additively manufactured metal components are produced by the deposition of liquid metal to a near net shape. This provides the unique opportunity to tailor the local process conditions and even alter the chemical composition locally in the weld pool to induce specific desired properties. Using graded functionality leads to revolutionary product design and improvements in the service performance of structural components. -
R&D LeadRamlab Mar 2017 - Jun 2020Rotterdam Area, NetherlandsShaping R&D strategy and management, I established and grew an R&D team of junior engineers and researchers to lead academic-industrial collaborative research projects that focused on materials. Preparing a series of research proposals with successful outcomes at regional, national, and EU levels, I gained funding through various national and EU financing mechanisms. Working with 30 companies, I accelerated the development of large-scale 3D metal printing in a Start-Up Environment. Here, I established material evaluation methods and processes together with Bureau Veritas for the certification of the WAAMPeller, the world's first 3D printed Propeller, which went on to receiving a listing in the 2019 Guinness book of Records. I also represented the company at a variety of events (Holland High Tech), trade fairs (Hannover Messe) and at international conferences (International Institute of Welding) as well as being invited as a keynote speaker at TMS 2019 in San Antonio, USA. -
Phd ResearcherMaterials Innovation Institute M2I Mar 2013 - Jun 2017Overseeing a PhD research project entitled "Switching from Martensitic to Bainitic Microstructure in Medium Carbon Spring Steels", I collaborated with VDL Weweler, an Dutch spring maker and OEM automotive supplier of suspension systems. Here, I developed a new heat treatment approach for producing trailing arms resulting in higher mechanical performance, cost reduction via energy consumption reduction and different alloying, successfully delivering a 30% saving in energy costs while delivering the same performance. My research also resulted in the company adopting self-developed processing strategy for their future product line, including aligning manufacturing with the new framework for alloy design optimisation. -
Research AssociateColorado School Of Mines Mar 2016 - May 2016Golden, Co (Usa)Fatigue behaviour of bainitic, quenched and tempered and shot peened medium carbon spring steels. Residual stresses measurement with hole drilling technique. -
Research AssistantHellenic Research Centre For Metals S.A. Jul 2011 - Jul 2012Athens, GreecePlaying a key role in researching steel processes, products, and physical metallurgy division, I performed the statistical analysis of production and performance of plate and bar steel products. Here, I provided technical assistance and performed detailed failure analysis to Viohalco Group manufacturing plants in Greece, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and the UK, presenting findings to technical senior leadership teams.
