Clifton Strength - Top 5: Includer, Adaptability, Developer, Harmony, RestorativeI am an artist & Graphic designerI am a Southeast Asian artist from the remote border of Thailand and Myanmar, in what we refer to as Kaw Thoo Lei. The artwork that I make consists of traditional drawings using chalk and graphite, but I also create digital artwork that is made with vector design. I am a first-generation student who is pursuing a degree in art at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The artwork that I make demonstrates the values that I have for my culture, which is Karen (K’nyaw). As I am finishing up my degree, I feel a calling to reconnect with my culture and learn and understand it. There is so much beauty in it, but not much is being represented, because seeing works that are made by artists about their culture is beautiful. Art has always been part of the world, and the first work of art that I saw relating to my culture was from a book that had poetry in it. In the future, I envision that there will be more artwork that I and many other Karen artists can display and have an impact on.My biggest influences are the stories and sayings that are associated with my culture and the people who are like minded around me. Theirs is a history that has been passed down and needs to be shared so that people are more aware of it and acknowledge that it exists. Such as my (Saw) language, clothing, religion, and tradition. The artwork that I have done is associated with celebrations such as wrist-tying, Martyr Day, and attires. My inspiration as an artist comes from seeing other people’s artwork; I love the different mediums that people use and what an artist has created. art that is accessible to the public in a gallery or even online. I love going to art events and just looking around to get ideas so that I can be inspired for my own work. Seeing another artist's physical or digital work is always something that gets my creativity going. I believe art can help people and can have an impact on everyone in their own ways.
