For most of the 3 yr secondment I was the only BP and the only non Thai national working for Thailube. Key Achievements •Coaching and teaching the junior engineering and commercial Thai employees to speak English – in particular technical English.•Working and achieving “superior” performance rating in a foreign culture and in a second language.•Reviewing plant and infrastructure design and the interaction with the adjoining Thaoil Refinery, identifying modifications, new plant and joint operation that improved Thailube gross margin 0m pa and Thailoil gross margin. •Input into the technical and construction aspects of the EPC contract resulting in the inclusion of important performance criteria for key plant items.•Provision of advice re feed supply and product placement contracts which advantaged both BP and Thailube•Reviewing engineering design and signing off on model reviews in Korea identified unintended plant limitation due to restrictions in intertankage.•Attending Board meeting to provide progress reports•Attending commercial discussions with English speaking Banking Consortium to represent and argue Thailube position including a successful renegotiation of the financing terms.•Personally training operational and technical personnel•Selection of small commissioning support team who provided a high level of professional support.•Achieving a first attempt start up of the plant•Completing all unit and plant test runs within the warranty period• Development of a detailed spreadsheet based plant model that allowed production planning and commercial optimisation. This model was still in operation 11 years after start up.
