Architecting solutions for the global delivery of Polaris services. Helping teams do more with less.

May 2023 - Present

Senior Devops Engineer

Burlingame, California, Us

Joined Imply to help build observability and deployment pipelines for Polaris, Imply's managed offering of Druid as a service.

Aug 2021 - May 2023

Senior Build & Release Engineer

San Francisco, Ca, Us

I helped other engineers be more efficient at their jobs. I identified and remediated bottlenecks in our build pipelines and created tools to help make complex processes easy. I educated our engineers with in-person and remote training to help level up those around me. I dove into the deepest corners of our distributed systems and helped other engineers troubleshoot their problems.

Oct 2019 - Aug 2021

Operations Engineer

San Francisco, Ca, Us

In this role I continued to work with other teams to guide them towards building and deploying resilient services while increasing observability into those systems. My goal is to make it easy for other engineers to understand and implement the technologies they need to do their job. I do this by creating templates for our resources, documenting examples, and giving presentations.Key Accomplishments:* Wrote and presented numerous technical talks throughout the organization, delivering insight and providing clarity to other engineers on a variety of topics* Created CloudFormation templates for resources such as RDS, SNS, ElastiCache and Elasticsearch to accelerate the building of resilient services, improving the developer experience* Architected and implemented replacement for tightly coupled CloudFormation Exports that cannot be updated once used* Designed an alerting pipeline for services to publish alerts to SNS and relay them to specific Slack channels via a Lambda* Leveraged Route53 weighted records to achieve blue/green deployments of application updates with zero downtime and the ability to quickly and easily roll back* Wrote a Lambda to more effectively manage AWS ECS cluster autoscaling, allowing clusters to run more efficiently and reducing the cost of operation* Implemented event-based tracing by sending events containing an arbitrarily wide data structure, giving engineers the observability needed to follow inter-service requests from creation to completion* Coordinated an infrastructure-wide tagging initiative within AWS to facilitate cost tracking, giving visibility into unused resources that could be shut down, saving the organization thousands of dollars a month* Updated service messaging standards with AWS SNS/SQS provisioned by a shared template, allowing service owners to opt-in to replacing RabbitMQ with SNS/SQS

Jul 2018 - Oct 2019

Junior Devops Engineer

San Francisco, Ca, Us

PIX brought me on board to help with the migration of their monolithic architecture to the cloud. We used CloudFormation to build ECS clusters to deploy our microservices onto. One of my biggest accomplishments during this time was the parallelization of build and deployments via our Jenkins pipeline, drastically reducing the time from code commit to deployment. My other work centered around improving the reliability of our production systems, and contributing to making it easy for other engineers to deploy resilient services.Key Accomplishments:* Parallelized building and deployment of artifacts throughout numerous environments, decreasing deployment time to a fraction of what it was* Containerized legacy applications, allowing engineers to more easily test and run their code locally* Implemented AWS ALBs in front of an application, allowing the retirement of HAProxy instances at a savings of thousands of dollars a month* Deployed SumoLogic company wide, implementing a consistent data model of source categories to differentiate between different types of information ingested * Added test driven development to projects I was involved in, allowing engineers an easy way to gain confidence in their work* Built and deployed a RabbitMQ cluster orchestrated by Chef for the services team to use for messaging* Reduced toil by identifying and updating noisy alerts throughout the organization to only actively notify when there is a customer-affecting problem* Updated service templates to always create a base set of metrics for engineers to build off of when monitoring their service* Managed ECS clusters by updating hosts via automated pipeline and autoscaling based on specific host metrics

Nov 2017 - Jul 2018

Contractor @ Optum

Atlanta, Ga, Us

I joined Optum to help many of their internal teams harness modern code build and deployment practices. We took a Java application hosted on bare-metal and migrated it into various containers running on an internal Mesos cluster. As part of this initiative, we created a pipeline to build and release our code after performing tests. A large portion of this role was spending time with other teams to help bring them up to speed with technologies that were new to them.Key Accomplishments:* Part of DevOps team constructed to move greenfield application development from legacy VM stack to containerized infrastructure* Trained engineers in development best practices, including pull requests, continuous delivery principles and containerized workflows* Wrote Jenkins pipeline as code to automate the build and deployment of containers between multiple environments* Deployed applications to multiple environments hosted within Mesos clusters* Monitored logs using Filebeat in containers coupled with an internal ELK stack we operated within Mesos* Created base docker images for app teams to utilize in deploying their applications* Built proof of concept leveraging Terraform to create a Kubernetes cluster hosted in AWS, leading to a planned migration into AWS
