While sharing my time between Carleton University and SNOLab, I devoted my research efforts as a physics graduate student to the Enriched Xenon Observatory (EXO) experiment. As a member of a small team within this large multinational collaboration, I helped to develop a method to detect barium ions using laser induced fluorescence in a high pressure vessel. This part of the experiment was one of two key components necessary in the efforts to experimentally confirm neutrinoless double-beta decay.EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS DEVELOPED:Monte Carlo computer simulations were created to develop and verify system designs to ensure that they met the specific requirements of the physics being explored. Several variants of a test system were constructed and tested in a state-of-the-art laboratory with Class 1000 clean room and Class 4 laser radiation qualifications.
