The best source of business and new employees is through your existing employees and customers. But if people don't know what you do and that you have a need, if they aren't aware, you are going to have a tough time filling those needs.CultureThe construction industry has done a particularly bad job of creating a great culture. As a leader, it is your job to get up every day and point to the horizon and say, this is where we are going, this is why it matters, and this is the good we are doing in the world. When people feel a sense of purpose and direction in their work they don't leave and they recruit others to be part of the mission. But here's the thing, you have to define your culture and then you have to communicate it. That's why we start with building your image and awareness before we fix your culture.

In 2013 my business partner and I dreamed of creating an emergency communications platform to help businesses, municipalities, and government agencies effectively communicate during crisis events.After securing funding we got to work and within 6 months had our first version of the software ready for release.In the early days, my role primarily consisted of guiding feature development and overseeing part of the development team.We grew quickly. In a short period of time we added all the major oil companies including Shell, BP, ExxonMobil, Chevron, and many others. We also brought on the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the Houston Office of Emergency Management, and the New York City Office of Emergency Management. During our period of major growth, my role shifted to both onboarding and on-site support. I worked with many of our clients during their practice drills where they simulate responding to an actual incident.Because the software is used primarily in emergency situations we needed to have a resilient network with near 100% uptime. Using Amazon Web Services I designed and built out our infrastructure. Our system was infinitely scalable and automatically responded to loads. We could launch new websites in minutes with the ability to handle hundreds of thousands of visitors.
