My experience at Capital One has involved creating, running and continually assessing strategies to mitigate deposit fraud, account takeover, asymmetric risk scenarios, and the unique risks presented by small businesses. Fraud strategy work in a time when banking is going digital at a company that is seeking to lead that change and in the face of fraud threats that are growing in diversity has been endlessly fascinating. It has required that I work across data science, analytics, operations, and product management disciplines to find leverage points and deliver in market. Key results in my time so far:• Delivering an operational team to mitigate asymmetric risks in the small business space; this required a gap assessment of risks, creating fraud defenses to fill the gaps, ensuring operational execution occurred as intended, and running the ongoing effectiveness monitoring• Co-creating a proprietary model to predict deposit fraud with a team of data scientists; this model has served as the foundational deposit fraud defense for 3+ years at Capital One• Partnering with product teams to deliver a digital-first Small Business checking product - including requisite account opening controls, money movement policies, authentication strategies, and supporting fraud defenses• Overhauling the bank’s approach to authentication and fraud risk mitigation in our contact centers - led the testing and delivery of new models to mitigate phone number spoofing and account takeover attempts, introduced a new step up authentication tool for agents that is faster, more customer-friendly and more secure
