I've spent my professional career working with hundreds of brilliant and talented colleagues (and two fragile narcissists) in ventures that span education, entertainment, media, hospitality, and real estate development. I founded Veritas Prep with my best friend Markus Moberg and served as its CEO for 16 years prior to its acquisition and subsequent IPO. I also co-founded Codesmith, a software engineering academy; Everydae, a digital tutoring platform; and Spectrum Station; a network of preschools. I developed some of the foundational properties in the Crossroads Arts District of Kansas City, Missouri, as well as Kon Tiki, Taqueria Conchita, and an award-winning brewery, Torn Label. I've also invested in and produced two dozen feature films, including official entries at the Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, and Cannes film festivals. Along the way, I co-founded Freakonomics Media and was twice nominated for an Emmy® Award. I am a graduate of Arizona State University, the Yale School of Management, the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law, and the Harvard Kennedy School. I am a Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute and divide time between Truckee, California, and Kansas City, Missouri, with my wife Sacha, our two children, a feisty German Shepherd, and four enigmatic cats.
