My career has been a long book of lessons and new tasks learned. I have been fortunate to work with many intelligent people over the years who were masters of their trade and willing to mentor me. Many of my job titles carried the title “EHS”, but I never really handled environmental issues. Fortunately working for Tapstone Energy, I was afforded the opportunity to expand my knowledge and skillset. I now handle every aspect of my title. I handle the “E” by remediating spills and mitigating possible environmental hazards as they are identified. I am also responsible for helping with annual reporting and inventory for GHG and other federal and state air quality regulations. I assist with coordinating stack tests for compressor engines and chemical storage reporting for annual Tier II reporting company wide.The “H&S” of my title comes by the way of conducting quarterly safety meetings and also required employee training such as H2S certification training. I also conduct post accident investigations and follow ups. I work with operations to review and mitigate safety concerns with upcoming projects. While at Tapstone Energy I developed and helped implement two separate programs. SERs (Safety Environmental Reviews) are used to identify both safety and environmental concerns on our locations and mitigate the hazards in a proactive approach. Working with management, I also created a KPI system for our group, to be able to actively track the field EHS team’s efficiency. Both the KPI and SER systems were created with our IT group to be completely automated; allowing realtime reports to be generated. Reporting assists management with identifying problem areas and also lagging indicators.I very much believe being a Safety Professional is 80/20....80% relationships and 20% what you know. The old saying no one cares what you know until they know how much you care, has proven to be very true over the years. If you can not build a trusting relationship with your company’s field level employees and management it doesn’t matter how much you know, because no one is listening. You have to be the “safety guy” who actually cares about no one getting hurt, instead of whose life you can make difficult or whom you can get in trouble on a daily basis.
