Having spent more than 15 years (60% of his life) in the pool, it’s no wonder that Chancellor Ramirez is more comfortable in water than on land.The Pasadena native’s experience started at an early age – learning to swim at the local Gerrish Swim & Tennis Club. His skills soon led him to occupy a spot on the club’s swim team where he continued to demonstrate an exceptional talent for water sports. After a few years of swimming laps across the pool, he began looking for more stimulating ways to spend his time in the water. At age nine, he was invited by family friends to train with their son in water polo at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. After a few visits, Chancellor realized how demanding water polo training is and was unsure if he could balance academics with his new passion. The Rose Bowl Water Polo (RBWPC) coach at that time, Jimi Campillo, recognized Chancellor’s potential and encouraged him to ease into the daily workouts.Chancellor’s prowess in water polo was developed by his RBWPC Coach Daniel Leyson and through USA Water Polo’s Olympic Development Program/National Pipeline where he quickly rose through the Youth and Junior ranks. As a member of the Junior national team and arguably the top high school player in the nation, Chancellor was heavily recruited by the top schools and water polo programs across the nation. He chose to continue his academic and water polo careers at UCLA, one of the sports’ top schools. During Chancellor’s incoming summer to UCLA he was promoted to the USA Water Polo’s Senior national team as the 2013 team’s youngest member. As a player on that team, he competed in the FINA 15th World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, scoring two goals.Upon his graduation from UCLA, Chancellor continued the pursuit of his passion for water polo by embarking upon a professional career in the sport, playing for several European teams. In 2017 and 2019, Chancellor competed in his second and third World Championships with the U.S. senior team, who placed 13th and 9th respectively. In 2019, he was named to the first 11-man roster in Team USA’s history, competing with that team in the XVIII Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Ramirez’ contribution to the team helped them win the gold – punching their ticket to Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
