Senior Optical Engineer - Planned, performed and analyzed the results of key optical testing on NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope in cryo-vacuum environment. Tests included photogrammetry with analysis (Spatial Analyzer Software), in-situ pupil alignment and in-situ focal length measurement. Expert-level knowledge of hardware and software enabled the successful completion of tests during 4 cyro-vacuum tests and 2 vacuum tests. I received two achievement awards from my management: “Ten under 10” recognizing the contributions of 10 employees company-wide that had less than 10 years of employment and “President’s Award” recognizing my effort applied to completing tasks successfully and on schedule.

Senior Optical Engineer - Designed and toleranced the optics for a video rate visible spectrometer specialized for microscopy and the biomed field. This is an R&D 100 award winning device that I solely built for each customer. Designed and toleranced the athermalized optics for an f/1 video rate LWIR spectrometer specialized for imaging hydrocarbons for the oil and gas industry. Designed the optics for a visible-SWIR video rate spectrometer for surveillance.

President/Optics Consultant - Leading optics and non-optics based companies on physical, geometrical and illumination optics design and providing high precision spectropolarimetry.Major contracts include:• Raydyne, Inc.— Modeled and designed the optics for a concentrated solar panel system.• Display Engineering, Inc.—Created the first detailed model of a novel LED illuminated display system (OptiCAD.) Designed and optimized the optical performance of the sources, the backlight waveguides and the revolutionary MEMS light valve with a new light recovery scheme.• ERF Wireless, Inc.—Evaluated the computation methods used by commercial microwave path analysis software programs to resolve some very expensive as-built discrepancies.• HSA Engineering—Developed concepts and laboratory tests to improve performance of the Hewlett Packard Light Scribe product. Designed and built a bench top test bed for a telecentric optical imaging system (Zemax.)• Intel, Inc.—Developed software for modeling LCOS devices and other polarization optics in high NA environments (LabView.) Designed laboratory instruments to perform quality control measures for prototyping and manufactured products.• Moxtek, Inc—Developed model for polarization components (Mathematica) combined with sensitive spectropolarimetry to resolve difficult issues with wire grid polarizers.• Optics 1—Created specialized tolerance analysis software for a telecommunications product (MatLab.) Corning Glass was the ultimate customer.• Duke University—Authored intellectual property pertaining to the display industry.• NASA—Executed a research project for the Next Generation Space Telescope. Modeled and experimentally verified a phasing algorithm for segmented optics (GLAD and LabView.) This project culminated in my PhD thesis and a patent.

Physical Optics Engineer, Advanced Technology R&D - Developed physical optics design for Compaq’s projection monitor program to enable aggressive schedules.• Generated 5 strategic concepts in physical optics, electro-optics and opto-mechanical design. • Optimized the physical and geometrical optics design to achieve exceptional contrast performance which required developing manufacturing techniques new to the industry.• Optimized all color influencing components (color splitter, light valves, UV and IR filters, screen, beamsplitter, and source) to increase the available color space, to achieve the appropriate white point, and to meet brightness goals.• Established and lead polarization optics team to design and build 4 testbeds to analyze the performance of all polarization components and define specifications in support of high volume manufacturing equipment (>10,000/ month).• Directed three vendors and worked with four others to make proprietary components production ready.
