I am the technical lead for Google's software foundations and programming languages, with focuses on performance, compilers, and long-term programming language strategy. This includes broad work across all of Google's languages, but also diving deeply on some of our most difficult and long-term challenges such as C++'s evolution and memory safety.

I help represent Google on the C++ Standards Committee.

I served on the Board for the Standard C++ Foundation, a Washington 501(c)(6) not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to support the C++ software developer community and promote the understanding and use of modern Standard C++ on all compilers and platforms.http://isocpp.org/about

While I started contributing to LLVM itself in 2007, it wasn't until late 2009 that I started contributing in earnest, and even then I was more focused on the Clang C and C++ frontend until 2011. Since 2011 I have been contributing significantly to LLVM both as part of my job at Google and in my own time.I'm responsible for the current inline cost analysis, scalar replacement of aggregates, and code layout in LLVM. I have worked heavily on address mode matching for x86, loop pass structure, the canonicalization passes, the reassociate pass, and the profile weight modeling infrastructure.I also redesigned and rewrote the core pass management infrastructure of LLVM to enable more powerful inlining, profile guided optimizations, and LTO.

Starting in late 2009, I began to help the Clang C and C++ frontend in the LLVM project build its support for the C++ programming language as part of my job at Google. I contributed significantly to Clang through 2011, but since then I have focused more of my energy on LLVM and other efforts. I continue to contribute occasionally where useful, often as part of LLVM-project-wide changes.
