I would set up a sterile field in order to do a surgical procedure. This requires scrubbing, gowning and gloving. Once the surgical case is set up then I would assist the surgeon and the first assist on draping and handing instruments. I also am required to maintain counts of all sponges and sharps that are used in each case. This is followed up by cleaning and organizing the room for the next case. Worked in a surgical atmosphere where sterility was my main priority. Maintaining sterility of instruments, ensuring proper working order of equipment, accurate counts of instruments, sponges, and sharps during surgical procedures. Positioning, prepping and draping of patients. General knowledge of surgical procedures to anticipate the needs of the surgeon. Understanding the operation of equipment that correspond to certain instruments. Critical thinking to fix the malfunction of equipment as needed. Staying aware of all medications on my sterile field, and knowing the contraindications of each medication to ensure the safety of my patient. Interacted with several different staff members in each case: anesthesia, surgeon, surgical assistant, medical students, circulating nurse, and sales reps.
