After spending over seventeen years in various corporate positions, Chandra embarked upon her second career as an Educator in late 2014. Starting as a substitute teacher and then hired full time as a Special Education Partner Teacher, she became a 2nd Grade Lead Teacher at Freedom Preparatory Academy - Westwood by 2015, acquiring licensure in early 2016 for grades K-6. Since that time, Chandra has taught English Language Arts, Reading Intervention and Writing, specifically in Upper Elementary (4th and 5th Grades). Currently, she has developed a youth writing program, Kulture Teach, which will help Black youth between the ages of 14-17 to craft their own voices through the power of writing. Lastly, she is working on an initiative that will help schools and districts develop and manage robust learning communities that will serve the needs of low literacy students in underserved neighborhoods. Chandra is also a writer, playwright, essayist, blogger and media personality. Writing under the pen name Chandra Kamaria, she founded Harkins House Productions in 2010 & successfully debuted her first stageplay, FOUR WOMEN, at the Evergreen Theater in Memphis. Her second stage play, The Man Store, debuted with rave reviews in May 2013 for two weekends at TheatrreWorks Memphis and for one encore weekend in November of the same year. This stage play was nominated for a Best in Black Award presented by the Tri-State Defender. Chandra is working to present the work of Harkins House Productions through multimedia resources and technical advancements. In addition to stage plays, HHP also has a special events division, Kulture Groove, that creates social and artistic concepts for communities of color.
