Emergency Department Technician
Current- Performs basic patient care such as vital signs, patient hygiene, mobility assistance and specimen collection.- Performs basic first aid measures, as well as basic wound care, irrigation, wound prep, dressing applications and suture removal.- Documents information and procedures; promptly communicates observations, concerns and needs of the patient to the RN and/or provider.- Performs approved orthopedic procedures such as fiberglass splint applications and other orthopedic splints/devices.- Obtains blood samples for medical testing by venipuncture or capillary testing.- Performs point of care blood tests; logs laboratory orders and sends specimens to appropriate lab.- Maintains unit supplies by stocking patient rooms, IV carts and other specialty carts to meet patient care needs.- Assists in keeping patient care areas and equipment clean.- Organizes splint class for new hire ED technicians and assist PA in teaching proper application techniques.- Assists MDs/PAs/ RNs by preparing equipment and supplies for procedures (LPs, I & Ds, laceration repair, chest tubes, central lines, etc.).- Orients and trains new technicians to the emergency department.- Works with education supervisor to implement training and monitoring measurements for new hire ED technicians.- Performs duties of the unit secretary; including but not limited to: maintaining patient charts, answering and redirecting phone calls, organizing patient transports and transfers as necessary.
