AppScale is a distributed software platform that we developed in the research lab at UCSB. Given the popularity of AppScale and to support our growing user community, we have decided to transfer the technology from the lab to the commercial sector. AppScale is an open source cloud platform that is API-compatible with Google App Engine that facilitates easy-to-use, yet scalable and portable application deployment -- across disparate cloud fabrics (APIs, infrastructures, public and private). Think of it as Google App Engine behind your firewall.I am a co-founder of AppScale Systems, Inc. and was CTO from 2012-13. In October of 2013, I moved to the position of Chief Scientist so that I could focus on identifying and developing the next-generation in cloud platform technologies.

Chandra Krintz is a Professor of Computer Science (CS) at UC Santa Barbara, with M.S./Ph.D. degrees in CS from UC San Diego. Chandra has led a number of different research projects that have advanced the state-of-the-art in programming systems in ways that improve performance and energy consumption, and that ease development and deployment of software. Recently, her work has targeted distributed and multi-language runtime systems and cloud platforms. Chandra has supervised and mentored over 60 students, has published her work in a wide range of top venues, and has led several educational and outreach programs that introduce computer science to young people.

Chandra's research focus targets the areas of programming language implementations (virtual execution environments, garbage collection, adaptive compilation, etc.) and cloud runtimes (application development, deployment, debugging, and optimization).
