Undergraduate Research
Research: A Computational study of small Hubbard ClustersThroughout history, many theoretical models have been put forward with the intention of deeper understanding of various properties of condensed matter physics. The main ingredient of such a top model is the ability to capture the essence of a phenomenon while being simple. The Hubbard model offers one of the simplest ways to get an insight into how the onsite and inter-site interactions between electrons give rise to insulating, magnetic, and even novel superconducting effects in solids. This led to synthesize of real materials such as organic charge-transfer salts and inorganic materials which interpret these special behaviors of solids at both low and high temperature. The Lanczos method associated with Exact diagonalization was used to solve the Hubbard model for strongly correlated electrons systems analytically in arbitrary dimensions for 1D and 2D clusters. The energy variation of electrons at ground state, charge gap, excitation gap, charge-charge correlations, spin-spin correlations and normalized double occupancy of these systems were studied. In summary, these exact Hubbard cluster calculations, carried out at quarter filling for different 1D and 2D finite clusters show an instability which translates either to a phase transition, Mott transition or superconducting nature at T=0 K. A variety of properties are demonstrated in these small clusters which could be tuned by extending the calculations to large clusters and by including new parameters. These small cluster studies would be useful in understanding transition phase diagrams and the results obtained highlight the important aspects of the instability present in finite Hubbard clusters.
