Amnesty International Australia is part of the global movement promoting and defending human rights and dignity. The role of the Branch Committee is essentially to motivate, coordinate and develop local human rights activism. Branch Committees also undertake governance roles delegated by the Board, including organising Branch Annual General Meetings, managing the region's budget, undertaking consultations with members on key issues and resolving or raising members’ issues as appropriate. One of the main focus in my role as a treasurer is to ensure that our activists seize the opportunity to take actions that will have the most impact on human rights.In addition:• drafts the region’s Budget;• oversees the spending of the region’s budget and reports regularly to the Branch Committee;• prepares quarterly re-forecasts of the regional budget, in conjunction with the Branch President, Community Organiser and Activism Support Coordinator;• provides advice on regional budget issues to AIA’s Finance Manager and/or Director of Support Services as required; and • where applicable, monitors local group bank accounts.

Chanphyna acts as an advocate providing high quality legal services including duty lawyer services, casework and advice services relating to criminal law, family violence law and children's law. Chanphyna is currently in her second placement at Shepparton VLA Office doing child protection, youth crime, family violence at the Specialist Family Violence Court, and summary crime work.Chanphyna completed her first placement in the Melbourne Child Protection team along with weekly youth crime work at Magistrates' Court at locations including Ringwood, Moorabbin, Melbourne, and Frankston.About the Program: The New Lawyers Program (NLP) is a two-year program designed to develop and train new lawyers into confident and competent Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) lawyers who can effectively represent VLA’s unique and diverse client base. The program includes up to four placements of six months’ duration in metropolitan, regional, and CBD offices, with exposure to a broad range of legal matters across various program areas.

Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) is an organisation that provide free legal information, provide legal aid and education to all Victorians, with a focus on prevention and early resolution of legal problems.As an Legal & policy Officer in the Criminal Law Team, Chanphyna is responsible for administering the legal aid fund through grants of legal assistance in an efficient, fair and economic manner.Responsibilities:- Liaise with clients, courts and lawyers and provide information about how to apply for legal assistance and the status of current grants.- Assess and process applications for legal assistance in criminal law (indictable matters).- Draft Memos for High Court matters to be reviewed by VLA Managing Director and various Managers & Directors- Assess and process legal professional costs and disbursements incurred in grants of legal assistance.- Perform administrative tasks and contribute to other work in the Assignments Unit, as required.

As an assessment officer, Chanphyna worked in the Assignments Unit that sits within the Legal Practice Directorate. The Assignments Unit is responsible for administering the legal aid fund through grants of legal assistance in an efficient, fair and economic manner and is comprised of the Family Law Team, Criminal Law Team, Civil Law, Policy and Support Team.Responsibilities:- Liaise with clients, courts and lawyers and provide information about how to apply for legal assistance and the status of current grants.- Assess and process applications for legal assistance in family law matters.- Process and manage orders received from courts for representation in family violence matters and the appointment of Independent Children’s lawyers.- Assess and process legal professional costs and disbursements incurred in grants of legal assistance.- Perform administrative tasks and contribute to other work in the Assignments Unit, as required.

As part of the Law Institute of Victoria Judicial Program, Chanphyna is a mentee to His Honour Judge Macaulay at Supreme Court of Victoria.
