I was accepted into the Fellows program through Shasta College. I taught third to sixth graders, twice a week for three hours. The goal of this after school program was to engage students to identify a problems in the community, discuss these issues and to create solutions. My job as a coordinator was to help foster the children's imagination with as little persuasion as possible. The students decided to learn about recycling, feeding the poor and they also wanted to help seniors. Our four and a half month program consisted of learning about ecological issues, recycling, reusing, and finding how cultures around the world live with material waste. The children decided to create a fundraiser. We collected recycling and in return they decided on using the funds to feed a deserving family a holiday meal, and to make a paper banner for Christmas made from recycled home made paper. As a participant I handled organizing the program, collecting material, presenting educational media, and coordinating activities. I taught between three to eleven kids at any given time. The position was volunteer.
