Telling stories is my jam.After somehow convincing my overprotective Asian parents to let their only daughter go to theatre school in Montreal, I graduated with honours and began my storytelling and producing career. Spawned from a theatre class, I went to create a solo theatrical show called “Someone Between”. To my surprise and delight, the story of my family’s journey to Canada from Southeast Asia about cultural transition and identity resonated with people I never expected. Through several artist-in-residencies, the piece was presented on multiple stages including Centaur Theatre, Young Centre for the Performing Arts and Summerworks Performance Festival. Led by my curiosity with the craft of acting, I stumbled on teaching and facilitating acting and storytelling workshops in my last year at Concordia University. What better way to learn than to teach, right? And did I learn... Most of all, my students taught me that each of us have an important story to tell, a unique voice deserving of space. And it is in these unique stories that we build empathy, compassion and see ourselves in one another. These values are dear to me. I developed a resilience to change, the ability to be resourceful and collaborative approach to problem solving through my eclectic/diverse experience in the entertainment, finance, customer service (or sales) and education sectors. As an ACTRA and CEAE member, I sit on the board of Nightwood Theatre and ACTRA’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee because representation matters. I am drawn to dynamic environments where I am constantly learning something new.
