Lead/Senior Mechanical Design Engineer/Mechanical Design EngineerBlackberry Sep 2000 - Oct 2017Waterloo, Ontario, CanadaMember of RIM/Blackberry Patent Review committee (2010/11~2013/10).Over the more than 17 years with Blackberry, I have been involved in most of Blackberry’s major mobile device design and development. Projects have included two of IoT shipping container tracking devices -"Blackberry Radar", "Radar Lite", and Mobile phone devices "Rome/Mercury(KEYone)", "Passport(3 projects)", "Q10", "Bold 9900/9930", "Storm", "Bold 9000", "Pearl 1&2", "Charm A&D", "Charm iDEN", "Electron", "Photon", "Baryon", "Quark", and "Tachyon 1&2", for a total of over 20+ devices. As a Lead/Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for the last over 7 years, I’ve collaborated closely with ID, hardware teams, manufacturing, testing/validation teams, brought ID requirements to detail designs, and been responsible for the design, analysis, documentation, test plans, and functional validation of the devices as well as key mechanical components & assemblies. I bring experience applying engineering knowledge with designs, achieving robustness and proper performance for products and components as well as on-time delivery.I created clear batch controls in the system for variations of the key sub-modules during developing builds and led qualification activities with multiple teams before launch. I also coordinated with cross-functional teams to drive various manufacturing process improvements at the Asia supplier sites. I bring a history of excellent performance under pressures and delivering according to commitments. I have developed new and creative solutions for BlackBerry device keypad and related technoloiges, especially for the BlackBerry flagship keypad devices: KEYone, the Passport devices, Q10 & Bold 9900. -
Lead/Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (2010/04~2017/10)Blackberry Sep 2000 - Oct 2017Waterloo, Ontario, Canada- As Lead Mechanical Engineer worked on Blackberry IoT shipping tracking devices-Blackberry Radar and the 2nd generation. - Worked as technical leader for Blackberry JDM program (Rome/Mercury). From the very early stages, coordinated with different Blackberry teams and JDM partner teams for feasibility studies, and product definitions. Involved in achieving both the overall device requirements (Product Spec Definitions) as well as detailed designs. (The program was eventually released as the Blackberry KEYone).- Acted as Lead Designer for touch-enabled BlackBerry Passport keypad modules (3 programs), including POP FPCs, metal stiffeners which meet RF requirements, water protection barrier, and a system of optical backlighting. Two patents granted from Blackberry Passport devices design.- Managed feasibility studies and keypad module design and implementation for BlackBerry Q10. Three related patents granted.- Served as lead designer for BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 keypad module. Developed creative solutions including the ways to compensate tactile feels, and dome overlay re-invention, dome venting, and keypad deflection designs etc. Resulted in sales of more than 15 million devices to the market, as well as 11 granted patents. -
Mechanical Design Engineer (2000/09~2010/04)Blackberry Sep 2000 - Apr 2010Waterloo, Ontario Canada- Performed design of front housing assembly and related sub-parts/sub-assemblies design and implementation for Storm touch screen device, generating 4 related patents.- Led the design of the keypad for Comet(Pearl 2) and Meteor(Bold 9000) projects, including keypad and dome design, tooling follow-up and debugging, and mass production support. Resulted in 5 granted patents.- Handled Pearl 1 design including battery connector, charging connector, 3 compartments shielding can, Jog-ball assembly features design, microphone assembly and keypad module design, and over 18 language keypad artwork variants development. Resulted in 5 granted patents.- Completed thin device concept and feasibility studies. Including battery connection, multi-compartments shield design, and SIM card solution etc. - Designed a battery connector that was used by 80% of RIM/BlackBerry devices during peak usage (total more than 100 million pieces of this battery connector were produced in 5 years, from 2006 to 2011).- Developed BlackBerry’s early devices: Charm, iDEN Charm (LCD & engine-platform design), Electron, CDMA Charm (LCD & engine-platform design), Baryon, Quark, Tachyon and Photon etc. The areas worked on these Blackberry earlier years devices (2000~2005): - Contributed to Charm engine platforms, LCD and backlight, drop-test related parts design, LCD mounting to PCB and reducing thickness, rear speaker connector, and SMT vibration motor qualification. - Participated in three-way battery connector design and external antenna grounding tube system for Baryon family projects, resulting in granted patents. - Performed LCD assemblies and related design for Photon, Quark, and Tachyon Blackberry family projects, including LCD module developing, battery connectors design, backlight connectors, side keys, motor boots, and full keypads etc.
