Multilingual environments are becoming more prevalent and it is increasingly common to acquire at least one foreign language. People who speak multiple languages are able to switch from one to the other, and often do so unconsciously. Although much is known about the factors that facilitate or inhibit language switching in both comprehension and production, the underlying mechanisms are not very well understood. In this project, I am using Artificial Neural Networks to develop a computational cognitive model that simulates, and thereby explains, language switching behaviour in multilinguals.

Unbabel is a Y Combinator translation service start up that combines crowdsourcing and Machine Translation (MT). My responsibilities included the development of translation aids for the (usually non­professional) editors, User Experience studies to assess the effectiveness of different interfaces, and automatic rule-­based quality assessment of the final job. Furthermore, I was maintaining the pre­- and post­-MT processing pipeline.
